Bison Attack 2: Electric Bisaloo? A Yellowstone visitor has been gored by a bison...again. (08:19)
A grizzly bear has pushed a hiker off a cliff. New fear unlocked for Shawnté on the eve of her departure to the JMT? (14:21)
A man was pinned by a boulder while hiking in Alaska. How can you be prepared for that?! (18:50)
Would carrying a gun make you feel more secure when out on the trail? (24:25)
For The Parting Shot Colin wants us to stop recruiting others to go outside, but probably not for the reasons you think. Meanwhile Shawnté promises to send us voice memos from the trail! (34:45)

Welcome to the Rock Fight. Rock Fight. Rock Fight.

Don't let our big time production value and celebrity names fool you. Looking at you, producer Dave but Rock Fight, LLC is a small business and growing brand.
And even though we have our own consigliere, King advises on other matters. We've got to consult a lawyer every now and then on the legal structures that every business needs.
But for a small business like ours, the cost to hire general counsel or pay a retainer is a non starter. So what's an outdoorsy founder to do? I mean, come on, we're not flashing that outside money. Enter Conatus Council.
They can help your business with fractional general counsel and legal services. From strategy consulting to advocacy and government affairs to real world implementation for outdoor recreation industry businesses.
Forrest over at Kanatas Council has helped Rock Fight navigate some of these areas. And let me tell you, knowing someone has your back means you can focus on running your business.
I mean, he had at least three edits to this read to quote unquote, protect us from ourselves. I mean, that's what I'm talking about. Forest cares just as much about the outdoors and the outdoor industry as our listeners. So, got questions?
Konatuscouncil.com to get in touch with Forest. The first six hours are free. Wait, what? What? I can't say that. Oh, initial consultations are free. Okay, fine.
In the store aisles, a quiet revolution is happening with Endeavor. Frontline staff aren't just selling products. They're building trust, making connections, and turning browsers into loyal customers.
Let's see how he didn't know which brand he wanted, just that the trail ahead was rocky. But she knew, because she'd trained for this moment right on her phone.
A quick conversation, a confident recommendation, and a perfect f hiking boot later, he's ready for his trip. That's right, she's a Shout the floor hero. It may be lunchtime, but between sandwich bites, he learned about fog fighting tech in snow goggles.
An hour later, that knowledge helped a customer pick the perfect pair and add a helmet too. Learning on the go, selling with certainty, adding value.
Yup, he's a Endeavor is a mobile first platform that equips retail staff with training, incentives and tools to boost sales and brand engagement. Brands gain insights, sell through improves, while retail associates stay motivated. Ready to get started?
Just head to Endeavor IO, update your brand profile and upload your dealer list to access the free features. And when you're ready, launch your first pay as you go campaign.
With flexible scalable options, Endeavor turns everyday interactions into strategic wins. The result?

Check out all of the hits from Fitz on their Spotify playlist. And now back to the show. Okay, we're back with Shantae Celebr for the last time. Potentially.
We may have one more bonus episode in the works, but maybe the last time until late July. Is that right?
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:48.830 - 00:04:52.590
Wow, you made it sound for a second there like I was dying or something. This is.
Colin True
00:04:52.590 - 00:04:53.350
That's what I'm going for.
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:53.350 - 00:04:57.200
She's going to die after this recording, but she wanted to do one more from her deathbed.
Colin True
00:04:58.310 - 00:05:00.230
Well, I do have one question for you, which is how dare you?
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:00.310 - 00:05:08.070
Oh, it's not personal. I got work to do, man. I gotta write a whole nother book. It's turns out I signed a contract and they want me to honor that.
Colin True
00:05:08.710 - 00:05:11.990
I didn't sign you up for that contract. I got pods to make. Let's go.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:12.230 - 00:05:21.590
You're gonna have to create a contract. You know what? That's true. I don't have a contract with you. What if I just go renegade and I start my own podcast out there?
Like recording terrible Stones Throw.
Colin True
00:05:21.910 - 00:05:24.150
Shantay says Stones Throw.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:24.470 - 00:05:25.750
It's a great record label.
Colin True
00:05:26.610 - 00:05:44.210
Hey, we're recording this on Monday. And Yesterday was Sunday, June 22, which was Ed Vester's birthday. I'm not sure if you're aware of this. Shantae.
Shantae's greatest hero in life, besides her Jason Momoa Pillow is Ed Veasters. As. As an Ed V Enthusiast, what do you want to believe that Ed did to celebrate his birthday?
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:44.450 - 00:06:07.500
Well, I. Yeah, I am a hardcore. I did meet him once, and it was really thrilling for me. We were at a conference.
I believe he's probably wearing his nicest Eddie Bauer outfit. And if he's not climbing a mountain without oxygen, you know, he is reading his own memoirs is my guess.
And probably eating, like, a bratwurst or something. I don't know. Unless he's a vegan, and then you can just pretend I didn't say that.
Colin True
00:06:07.900 - 00:06:14.180
I think he's a Wisconsin guy. Isn't. He's a Midwest guy? I forget where. Maybe it was, like, Missouri or something. Yeah, he's a Midwest guy. I don't think.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:14.180 - 00:06:35.670
I don't think it's my Midwest. Otherwise I would know that, and I would have said it to him when I met him, like, hey, Ed. Because people from Wisconsin.
I don't know, maybe people from other places do this, but we do have a habit of spotting each other in the wild. Like, maybe someone's wearing a Green Bay packers or, you know, Wisconsin badger shirt or something, and we're like, are you from Wisconsin?
Oh, my gosh. So am I. I just.
Colin True
00:06:35.670 - 00:06:36.950
See, the accent just kicks in.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:36.950 - 00:06:41.710
Yeah, yeah, it kicks in real hard. And then you're like, what are you doing later? What do you. Do you want to go on a boat together?
Colin True
00:06:43.470 - 00:06:55.110
The one thing I think you got wrong about Ed in that scenario that you laid out is that he is not in his best Eddie Bauer outfit. He's just in his, you know, insulated, you know, mountaineering suit that he wears at all times. He never is not in his giant downsuit.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:55.110 - 00:06:57.110
Like an alpine puff marshmallow.
Colin True
00:06:57.740 - 00:07:00.260
Yes. That's just how. And that's how, you know it's Ed. Like, oh, there's Ed.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:00.260 - 00:07:02.140
Oh, Ed. Hey, you look so fluffy.
Colin True
00:07:02.620 - 00:07:08.820
I did Send him a note through LinkedIn. When it said it was his birthday, I said, hey, Ed, happy birthday. Remember, there are no shortcuts to the birthday cake.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:08.820 - 00:07:09.580
You did not.
Colin True
00:07:09.980 - 00:07:11.580
I did. And he wrote back, ha ha.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:11.820 - 00:07:21.900
I do always. This is so nerdy. But when I've taught a lot of outdoor backcountry skills classes and I do always tell people, getting to the top is optional.
Getting down is mandatory at Vistas.
Colin True
00:07:22.710 - 00:07:27.510
Did I tell you about. And I might cut this from the podcast. This might be too long. But I tell you about when I was out with him on his book tour.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:27.670 - 00:07:31.910
No, why wait? Why didn't you holding out at me, man.
Colin True
00:07:32.550 - 00:07:39.750
I had to parcel up my celebrity stories because you have like 10 to 1 to mine. So like I told you about how I climbed the mountain with him. Now this is the second part.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:39.830 - 00:07:41.030
Wow. Stop showing off.
Colin True
00:07:41.030 - 00:08:12.130
So we sponsored his book tour when again, he was a Timberland athlete. And so the tech reps, well, there's only two of us at the time would actually go to.
He would do local bookshops and stop into retailers and stuff like that. So we got to travel around with him. And so this is for no shortcuts to the top.
And right before the last stop, which was in Boston, it was near Christmas and I said, hey, would you mind signing a book? I want to give it to my dad for Christmas. He's like, yeah, what do you want me to write? I said, hey, Pete, your son's a real pain in the ass.
And V stirs.
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:12.130 - 00:08:12.610
Perfect.
Colin True
00:08:12.690 - 00:08:13.570
And he did it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:13.970 - 00:08:16.090
He's a good natured man, you know he is.
Colin True
00:08:16.090 - 00:08:37.470
He thought it was funny. All right, today's opening shot is presented by your hub for Ultralight Gear Garage Growing gear. Head to garagegrowinggear.com and check them out.
And Shantae, we're so back. We're so back.
Because according to the New York Post earlier this month, the New Jersey tourist became the second tourist to be gored by a Yellowstone bison. So we're gonna have to like counter noises. Dinghy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:37.470 - 00:08:38.270
People's gonna. People.
Colin True
00:08:39.310 - 00:08:56.670
A 30 year old man was part of a larger group that approached the animal not far from Old Faithful when the bison charge and struck the man, causing minor injuries. I mean, at this point, what do we do with this information, Shantae?
I mean, are we gonna start, you know, I wanna start promoting pro bison petting propaganda just to, you know, bait the bison.
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:58.490 - 00:09:00.170
This is a guy like some better.
Colin True
00:09:00.570 - 00:09:06.170
Just like, no, they're friendly. Just pet them like good. There's another one out of the way. We don't have to worry about that person anymore.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:06.570 - 00:09:27.690
Wow. I mean, I have a few ideas of what we can start with there. I'll just keep them to myself, though.
I mean, honestly, I remember reading one of those books that lists out, you know, just all the myriad ways that people die in national parks. I think. I don't know if it was off the wall or whatever one of them. And I swear it just said something at some point.
Said something like, well, young men are just going to do dumb stuff, you know, more eloquently than that.
Colin True
00:09:27.690 - 00:09:29.290
But apparently older men too.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:29.290 - 00:09:32.390
Yeah. Any, you know, midd, middle aged men? Any. Yeah, it just might be.
Colin True
00:09:32.550 - 00:09:37.190
It actually reminds me, what's your chromosome situation? That could tell us a lot about what you're.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:37.270 - 00:10:24.770
Maybe there's a, like a something in the genome we need to map for bison petters. Like, there's got to be something broken in there.
But this reminds me, remember we got an email recently from a listener who's a former ranger and a bison expert. Troy Davis answering fan of the show. Thank you, Troy. Love you, Troy. That was one of my favorite emails I've seen so far. It was beautifully written.
I wish I could just read it out loud for the entire episode. But he answered the eternal question, why do people, which is my question, insist on touching bison? And he offered a laundry list of amazing reasons.
And I'm just going to read a few of them because honestly, it was just beautifully crafted. Reason number one, I pet this dangerous animal to show my manliness. Rippedness. Swoless. Hate that I had to say that out loud.
And to demonstrate my lack of fear and mastery over nature. You know. Okay, I can buy that.
Colin True
00:10:24.770 - 00:10:25.650
Yeah. Yeah.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:26.050 - 00:10:35.950
Here's another one. Animals will understand that I'm high, drunk or recovering from either poorly.
They will be kinder to me than the society anxiety which drove me to substance abuse.
Colin True
00:10:36.510 - 00:10:40.430
Unfortunately, not true. But yes. Maybe that's like, oh, the bison gets me.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:40.430 - 00:10:42.030
He understands me. Can we talk?
Colin True
00:10:42.030 - 00:10:46.350
He understands where I'm at. I'm so broken. And now I'm about to be physically broken because I ran into a bison.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:46.670 - 00:10:50.429
Just, you know, but that might feel worse. So in a way it made it better. I don't know.
Colin True
00:10:50.910 - 00:10:52.070
Because it made you feel things.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:52.070 - 00:11:23.100
Yeah. That's all sometimes you need us to feel, whether it's bison fur or a bison goring. You. Here's. Okay, I got to read one more. This is a good one.
You can bet I'm gonna pet or take a selfie or hug this Goddamn bison or alligator or cougar.
Because I've driven a thousand miles in an SUV with two screaming kids and a grumpy wife staying at cheap hotels and my back hurts and my teenage daughter is dating a musician and I hate the traffic jams and all these stupid tourists and this place is expensive and full of trees and some just stole that parking space. The ranger won't let me punch the. In the parking lot and.
Colin True
00:11:23.900 - 00:11:26.140
Yeah, and so I will hug the bison.
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:26.540 - 00:11:29.450
I just gotta get some out. Bison therapy.
Colin True
00:11:30.640 - 00:11:38.240
Are bison that attractive? If you were going to hug a wild animal with, you know, with a guarantee of no repercussion, marmot would be the one. Oh, you didn't even.
You didn't really finish the question.
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:38.240 - 00:11:40.160
I don't even need to hesitate. Why would you not.
Colin True
00:11:40.160 - 00:11:41.360
You want to hug a marmot?
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:41.360 - 00:12:11.380
I want so bad. I've. Listen, my one. My first initial wild animal desire was to hug a koala. And I checked that off the list.
I was in Australia for a work thing once and I looked up, I was like, can I hug a koala? There is one place, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. It's outside of, I think Brisbane. I. I rented a car.
I drove on the wrong side of the road for the first time ever. And then you better bet your sweet ass I hugged that koala and it hugged me back. I have like a prom picture of me in the koala.
It was like, is this life affirming?
Colin True
00:12:11.620 - 00:12:15.420
This is both a thing that exists and a thing that you did because you wanted to so badly.
Shawnté Salabert
00:12:15.420 - 00:12:16.860
True. All true. So if I'm.
Colin True
00:12:16.860 - 00:12:19.660
Did they test the qualities ahead of time for chlamydia or is that sort.
Shawnté Salabert
00:12:19.660 - 00:12:23.620
Of like a. I thought about that only after the fact, but I seem to be okay, so.
Colin True
00:12:24.680 - 00:12:28.760
Well, you had a solid out if like, you know, somebody called you, like.
Shawnté Salabert
00:12:30.840 - 00:12:31.880
Oh my God.
Colin True
00:12:33.320 - 00:12:35.880
Wow. Well, Troy, thanks for your email.
Shawnté Salabert
00:12:35.880 - 00:12:46.760
Yeah, please keep them coming. Myrockfightmail.com I always want to save my Rock Fight LLC at gmail, but that's an entirely.
That's where you send other things, your marketing dollars to that email.
Colin True

We're. No, it's. We're changing it up.
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:15.460 - 00:13:15.980
Oh, my God.
Colin True
00:13:15.980 - 00:13:17.860
That's. That's better. It's better than ggg.
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:18.260 - 00:13:25.330
There's only one of those words has an A after the G. It would be ga gur G. Ga ga ga ga gur gay.
Colin True
00:13:25.330 - 00:13:29.130
Ga ga ga ga gur gay. Do you not co sign Ga guh ga?
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:29.130 - 00:13:29.770
Not at all.
Colin True
00:13:30.570 - 00:13:35.610
We came up with this at Twitchback, by the way, Lloyd is that producer Dave and I came up with.
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:35.690 - 00:13:37.210
You guys did this when I wasn't around?
Colin True
00:13:37.690 - 00:13:38.130
Yes.
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:38.130 - 00:13:41.130
Hidden conversations. What else are you talking about when I'm not there?
Colin True
00:13:41.530 - 00:13:43.290
Just ga ga guh. That's it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:13:43.610 - 00:13:44.090
All right.
Colin True
00:13:44.730 - 00:14:00.600
Ga ga Ga also carries lots of innovative gear from small and cottage brands, so you can feel good about supporting your local small businesses. Click the link in the show Notes and happy trails. This summer, head to garage grown gear.com otherwise known as G. Wow, Colin, you hate it more.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:00.920 - 00:14:13.400
I. I don't know what I dislike more at this point. I need to think about it. I need to actually not think about it.
I'm almost dreading the Crush Chrome gear ads at this point. But I love them. But I don't love you saying their name. You're going to.
Colin True
00:14:13.400 - 00:14:14.920
I don't do the reads. Ggg.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:14.920 - 00:14:17.080
Can I do the reads Just for that brand.
Colin True
00:14:17.520 - 00:14:59.280
You're gonna stooge, are you? From now on, Garage Growing gear is Shantae's domain. Lightning Round.
Speaking of other things, today's rock Fight Lightning Round is presented by Oboz, who loves hiking. And as the cupid of the outdoors, Oboz wants to help you love hiking just as much as they do.
Couple of topics, Couple of topics here for the Lightning round is quick hitting stories.
First up, we're going to keep the animal theme misery going with a story from Gripped magazine who reported that earlier this month a hiker died after a brown bear pushed him off a cliff in northeastern Greece's I said France. For some reason, Fracto Forest feels like.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:59.280 - 00:15:02.600
Something like a pissy French bear would do. Get lost my teeth.
Colin True
00:15:04.360 - 00:15:30.120
You're not smoking the woods. Boom. The hiker was hiking with a companion and a dog when they came across the bear on a trail near a 2,600 foot cliff.
The dog distracted the bear and the hikers deployed bear spray. But then the bear targeted one hiker, pushing him off of the cliff. A local wildlife organization believes that the bear was just acting defensively.
A little bit of a crazy story and not one I've heard before. But Shantae, as we talked about, you're a week away from your three week, four way, you know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:30.280 - 00:15:32.440
I'm sorry, my three week. What am I doing out there?
Colin True
00:15:32.520 - 00:15:33.760
You're going on a little foray.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:33.760 - 00:15:40.600
I thought you said four way. I'm just gonna say that when you listen back to this, Colin, you're going to hear your mouth make the words.
Colin True
00:15:40.600 - 00:15:43.280
Say four way for three weeks.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:43.280 - 00:15:45.480
It's just me. I'm going alone.
Colin True
00:15:45.480 - 00:15:53.120
Okay, your tantric foursome is happening is coming up. Three marmots and a koala.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:53.120 - 00:15:55.960
No, the koala's not invited because of the, you know, vd.
Colin True
00:15:56.040 - 00:16:07.280
Oh, we have the aforementioned tested first. What's your wildlife mindset right now before heading out on your big backcountry trip? I thought of you like. I'm like, oh my God.
Shantae's gonna be out there with the bears.
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:07.280 - 00:16:21.860
What's happening? Thanks for thinking of me when you read about a bear pushing off a cliff.
You know, the funny thing is I just had this absolutely heated argument with a friend of mine. We were out walking and she for some reason was like, you know, bears want to kill us. I'm like, well, brown bears.
Colin True
00:16:21.860 - 00:16:22.420
Oh, come on.
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:22.420 - 00:16:34.460
Like, black bears don't really give a. They're kind of scared of us. Mostly they're disinterested. Maybe they just want our food. She's like, no, no, no, no. Black bears want to kill us.
And so I feel like now I have to send this to her as proof that it is the brown bears.
Colin True
00:16:34.460 - 00:16:43.720
Like I told her, yeah, the bear didn't bite anybody. He's just like, hey, motherfucker, check this out and shove the guy off a cliff. I feel bad to be making fun of the guy dying, you know, but.
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:43.880 - 00:16:57.800
But no, I mean, I am heading out into bearatory, as I like to describe it. I have had a lot of bear. Right. I mean, you can make anything. It is. Keep laughing. Are you sleep deprived? Maybe you look tired.
Colin True
00:16:58.520 - 00:16:59.240
Oh, thank you.
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:59.240 - 00:17:05.489
May I. May I suggest you get into a sleeping bag and sleep outside without a tent, which is when you make a bear veto.
Colin True
00:17:06.129 - 00:17:07.809
Oh, my God.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:08.129 - 00:17:17.409
And when you.
When you set your tent up and then you make sure your bear canister is in one area and you're cooking in another area, that shape you make is the Bermuda Triangle.
Colin True
00:17:18.049 - 00:17:20.289
Okay, enough bear puns. We're moving on.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:21.409 - 00:17:43.350
Yeah, no, I mean, I. I tend to think, like, my philosophy is, like, if I don't. If I. If I leave them the f. Alone, they'll leave me the falon. Right.
Like in general, I will admit that it is a little hard to stick to that philosophy when it comes to marmots, as I've mentioned, but I have so far resisted to just scoop one up into my hands because I'm sure they would use those claws and those little buck teeth and absolutely annihilate me.
Colin True
00:17:43.350 - 00:17:45.230
And then we'd be doing stories about you.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:45.230 - 00:17:51.870
I'd be the story. Then Troy would have to write in and be like, remember that list of idiot things that people think? But just add Shantae to that.
Colin True
00:17:52.270 - 00:17:53.390
And you're not a young man.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:53.470 - 00:17:56.750
So we want to see the curve.
Colin True
00:17:57.630 - 00:17:59.670
Is there an animal that you worry about particularly?
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:59.670 - 00:18:03.730
I mean, when I first started backpacking alone, I worried about mountain lions, if I'm being honest. But.
Colin True
00:18:03.800 - 00:18:04.440
But yeah, sure.
Shawnté Salabert
00:18:04.440 - 00:18:31.160
Truly, I'm moving a little scary far too slow out there. I'm just lumbering around with my pack on. So I'm not looking very tantalizing to a mountain lion. I did, I did see one once though, on the pct.
Uh, I was out there. I was alone that day. It was morning, it crossed maybe 20ft in front of me, just sauntering like, not a care in the world.
Me, meanwhile, trying not to pee my pants. All I could think of is that they have like a hundred mile home range and I cannot hike a hundred miles today to get to safety. So.
Colin True
00:18:31.720 - 00:18:33.520
Right. This thing's gonna be within that range.
Shawnté Salabert
00:18:33.520 - 00:18:34.280
Oh my God.
Colin True
00:18:34.520 - 00:18:35.440
For at least another day.
Shawnté Salabert
00:18:35.440 - 00:18:44.640
Yeah. I just had to hope that at that point I'd been on the trail for two months.
At that point I was like, I hope I'm just disgusting enough that it's looking at me like not even, not even close. Wouldn't even lick you.
Colin True
00:18:44.640 - 00:18:47.720
Well seasoned enough to, you know, that's.
Shawnté Salabert
00:18:47.720 - 00:18:48.280
What you call it.
Colin True
00:18:49.000 - 00:19:30.500
Yeah. All right, well, the next story we have is last month near Anchorage, Alaska.
A man was pinned under a 700 pound boulder for three hours while out hiking with his wife. The couple was passing through an area with lots of loose rocks and boulders, which then slid and pinned the man.
His wife, who was a trained police officer, called for help, and as they waited, she helped him keep his head out of water. Apparently that he was laying in as he drifted in and out of consciousness. I think, you know, this was kind of an amazing story.
It also was like, you know, pays that your wife is a trained police officer.
But great reminder that crazy stuff can happen in the backcountry and that being prepared doesn't just mean wearing the right clothes or carrying the right gear, like just random shit can happen. So don't let it scare you off. But holy crap. Holy cow.
Shawnté Salabert
00:19:30.500 - 00:20:19.420
But anything can happen. I mean, I do think it's. This is why I say anybody who's going out into the backcountry entry, especially if you're going out alone.
But just in general, I. Wilderness first aid, I cannot suggest enough.
It's worth the time and the money because you're going to learn how to do things that you can, you know, that will kind of keep you alive in theory or like help help minimize your injuries before help can get to you since you're so far out there. But overall, also, I cannot let my mom listen to this episode. I feel like it just sounds like. Like this entire episode is basically like the opening.
I don't know if you've read Bill Bryson's in a Sunburnt country about his chest in Australia. He first. It's like the first paragraph or the first chapter at least.
He talks about everything that can kill you and that wants to kill you in Australia. And I just, I think that alone ratcheted up my arachnophobia to the 12th degree.
Colin True
00:20:20.220 - 00:20:23.419
Well, when you were there, did you see the giant spiders and everything when you were.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:24.300 - 00:20:45.030
And I even went hiking when I was in Australia. I went out to. I was on the Gold coast for a while, but then I went down to Melbourne and did the Great Ocean Road and did some hikes over there.
It was basically like big sir with an accent. Yeah, I didn't, thankfully. I was so nervous though that I was gonna run into a spider, you know, that would just palm me on the face. Like, ugh.
That's my specific.
Colin True
00:20:45.110 - 00:20:50.070
It's gotta be. I mean, I understand that it's gotta be a little overblown at this point.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:50.070 - 00:20:51.670
Right? They're that large. They are large.
Colin True
00:20:52.150 - 00:20:53.910
They are pretty. I've seen the videos.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:53.910 - 00:20:56.230
They don't need to be. That's an evolutionary mistake.
Colin True
00:20:57.430 - 00:21:00.910
Yes. You've been on enough backpacking trips at this point. Your mom's gotta be okay, right?
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:00.910 - 00:21:02.270
No, not at all.
Colin True
00:21:02.270 - 00:21:03.550
She still, still does it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:04.110 - 00:21:15.390
I have to tell her like light lies. Oh, I'm meeting. I'm meeting a friend that's going to hike some. Some of the trail with me. I'm going to meet them while I'm out there.
They're going to be a new friend.
Colin True
00:21:15.950 - 00:21:17.710
You're having a four way for three weeks.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:18.110 - 00:21:18.670
For three weeks.
Colin True
00:21:18.830 - 00:21:19.870
She'd be more into that.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:20.110 - 00:21:21.790
I've got three others with me.
Colin True
00:21:22.430 - 00:21:26.430
It'll be great. No sleeping in the woods, no mountain lions.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:27.310 - 00:21:29.360
Pure safety in numbers.
Colin True
00:21:29.520 - 00:21:30.480
Do you want to read the.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:30.720 - 00:21:31.440
Oh, my.
Colin True
00:21:31.520 - 00:21:36.240
The Outro oboes to make up for the Gaga. All right, Gaga. Ga.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:36.320 - 00:22:01.330
Please stop. This is. I did not sign up for this Spotify subscription.
All right, today's Rock Fight Lightning round was brought to you by Oboz, who wants to share their love of hiking. And we want to help them by uncovering all the different reasons we love to take the long walk. Boy, do I. Including the following.
Number one, the trail is the only place where you can eat six granola bars and feel virtuous and then have the world's biggest shit.
Colin True
00:22:01.330 - 00:22:03.770
Is that the only place? Yeah, exactly right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:03.770 - 00:22:05.010
That's all I can think about is.
Colin True
00:22:05.010 - 00:22:06.250
It looks like bear scat.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:06.250 - 00:22:09.690
You know, I'm trying to commune with the bears so they don't push me up a cliff.
Colin True
00:22:10.410 - 00:22:14.730
Just note if Owen Comerford is listening. We could not make it through an episode. So.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:14.970 - 00:22:16.850
You said it. I didn't. I just want to point that out.
Colin True
00:22:16.850 - 00:22:23.690
I didn't say giant shit. You said giant shit. Yes. How did you even. You forgot. You just said it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:23.690 - 00:22:28.570
Oh, no, I did promise Owen I'd be more of a lady. I think I even called him.
Colin True
00:22:28.570 - 00:22:30.290
Don't make promises you can't keep it, sir.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:30.290 - 00:22:46.330
I will work on that. Oh, boy. Sorry, Owen. Personally, I apologize. All right, number two, because we should apologize to Oboz.
I should apologize to everyone at this point and here. Number two is great because silence is golden and rare when you're on a.
Colin True
00:22:46.330 - 00:22:52.170
Podcast, especially around here. If you are anywhere near the Rock Fight crew at Switchback, you know that there was no silence.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:52.170 - 00:23:01.170
Ah, there wasn't. I loved it. I like number three. Did you write this one, Colin? You did, didn't you? Chafing builds character.
Colin True
00:23:01.490 - 00:23:06.170
It's the only way to approach it because there's nothing else that you could actually apply to chafing to make it okay.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:06.170 - 00:23:41.770
Wow, that's. You're actually right. All right, number four, hiking means the Bridger Boot Collection.
The Bridger Ridge is here to help you smooth out the rough trails in front of you. You with enhanced stability and protection. The Bridger Ridge is Oboe's first boot with Gore Tex.
So bring on the smiles and the miles in the Bridger Ridge. And if you find yourself near Bradford, Vermont, this summer, pop into Farmway to pick up your own pair of Bridger Ridges.
Then cross the border into New Hampshire and take your new boots up mount. Oh. Why did you put this in here? I don't actually know how to say that. Mount Moosilot. You've been in the White Mountains, but not there.
Colin True
00:23:42.560 - 00:23:47.400
It's the further, it's the furthest wet further west. Furthest west, 4,000 footer than New Hampshire.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:47.400 - 00:23:53.040
It's one of those places where I know what it is, I know where it is, but I've never actually heard it said out loud.
Colin True
00:23:53.040 - 00:23:58.200
Famous for its backcountry skiing from the Dartmouth Outing Club there or whatever they're called, Outdoor club.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:58.200 - 00:24:14.410
I don't know. Well, you know what, Colin? This, this hiking appreciation moment is brought to you by Oboz of Bozeman, Montana, which I can pronounce ounce.
Oboz is the maker of premium quality footwear for the trail and the cupid to the outdoor world. Oboz love hiking.
Colin True
00:24:15.210 - 00:24:18.810
I used to do smartwell clinics when I was a tech rep at Farmway in Vermont.
Shawnté Salabert
00:24:19.050 - 00:24:24.810
Farmway sounds like, like it's as a Midwesterner, all I'm thinking about is fleet and farm. Fleet Farm and farm and fleet.
Colin True
00:24:25.050 - 00:25:29.850
All right. Today's main story is presented by Lem's Footwear.
Learn more about, learn more about what's happening at Lem's by heading to lems shoes.com so earlier this month on gearjunkie.com journalist Mattie Schuller posted an op ed about the potential of carrying a firearm while out in the backcountry. You know, whether to address safety concerns when it comes to wildlife. Be careful out there.
Yellowstone bison, people might be packing or other human beings.
The idea of being alone in the wilderness and wanting to have some peace of mind that you were able to either defend yourself or just tip the odds in your favor should you have a dangerous run in with people or animals. They're easy dots to connect.
In her piece, Maddie references other outdoor journalists who have weighed in on the topic in the past and usually conclude that they don't need a weapon. But as the turmoil in the world grows, as we before we hit record today, we're recounting the turmoil in the world.
You know, it seems like an idea worth revisiting. So, Shantae, again, grizzly bears, mountain lions. Oh my. On the trail. You know you're going to be on the GMT a week after this episode comes out.
What do you think about carrying a gun as a solo female backpacker in 2025?
Shawnté Salabert
00:25:29.930 - 00:25:34.850
You are the 759th person to ask me that question since I began back.
Colin True
00:25:34.850 - 00:25:35.810
I'm glad you're keeping track.
Shawnté Salabert
00:25:35.810 - 00:26:36.480
Yeah, I keep a little tally mark. I mean, so I've taught Outdoor skills, backcountry classes, like I said for a long time now.
And one of the things I talk about when I'm doing that or if I'm doing presentations about the PCT or whatever is I talk about this idea that we like to pack our fears. And so for a lot of people that means bringing like multiple changes of clothes because you're worried about being dirty.
Maybe it's bringing just way more food than you could eat in two days. Like, you know, a week's worth of food or something.
Bringing like I met a girl on the PCT who's now one of my closest friends, but she had double of everything in her pack. She had two full rolls of toilet paper. She had two full water pump, like filters, the pump style, stuff like that.
She had two stoves or no, it was two solar panels, like all this stuff because she was so worried that something would break and then like hell would break, like loose. So for me, when I'm out there and you know a, unless I'm in polar bear country, I'm not carrying a gun.
Like, I'm over here shopping at the shimmering online temple of Lloyd Vogler. I just called him.
Colin True
00:26:37.200 - 00:26:38.400
I'm not cutting that out.
Shawnté Salabert
00:26:39.280 - 00:26:40.880
I don't even know anymore.
Colin True
00:26:41.360 - 00:26:50.070
Well, you know what you did? That's your Gen X showing. You combined Lloyd Vogel with Lloyd Dobler from say Anything. Absolutely did. That's the most amazing shout out John Cusack.
Wow.
Shawnté Salabert
00:26:50.070 - 00:26:52.910
I'm not. Yeah, no, listen, if I'm over at Lloyd's.
Colin True
00:26:52.910 - 00:26:54.310
Too young to understand that reference.
Shawnté Salabert
00:26:54.550 - 00:26:56.710
You're right, actually, baby face.
Colin True
00:26:56.710 - 00:26:57.190
Lloyd.
Shawnté Salabert
00:26:57.270 - 00:28:02.770
Yeah, listen, I'm not shopping a crush grown gear to make my pack heavier. I'm doing it to make it lighter.
But you know, in reality, I think about if we're talking about packing our fears, what's realistically going to happen? The thing is, humans are. I was having lunch with my cousin today and we were talking about some of the things happening.
I live in a neighborhood in Pasadena that's been heavily impacted by ice and it's been very upsetting. And you know, we were talking about like, what do you actually prepare for versus what's realistic?
And he was saying like, you're going to go out on the trail and are you. Same thing you just asked me, are you worried about animals? You know, yada yada.
And we ended up talking about how people are the most unpredictable and dangerous animal there is. Right. So I understand why some people want to carry a gun. I grew up around guns. I grew up in Wisconsin. I grew up around hunting. I'm not a hunter.
I do fish. But, you know, I took hunter safety classes as a kid. It was almost mandatory for everyone. Even if you didn't end up hunting, which I didn't.
I've shot a gun myself. Although if I'm gonna be fair, it was a tranquilizer gun that a wildlife biologist let me shoot directly into a tree stump and nowhere else.
But even holding.
Colin True
00:28:02.850 - 00:28:04.170
Cause you weren't allowed to shoot it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:04.170 - 00:28:05.410
Yes, well, they were.
Colin True
00:28:05.410 - 00:28:06.370
This a reflection on you?
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:06.370 - 00:29:21.450
It was out. They were tagging deer and they were not about to let me break many laws and tag that deer myself.
But no, it's, you know, even holding the tranquilizer gun, I felt the weight of it. You feel the seriousness of it. Guns are tools.
And in this case, you know, I grew up in the inner city for gun is a tool for violence, but I also understand their utility and other aspects for me. Backpacking, I just, you know. Yes, humans are unpredictable. Yes, we are the most dangerous. Yes.
If you are in polar bear country, I think you ought to have something pretty strong with you. Grizzly country. I would carry spray, but no, I've never felt the need. And I've. I've encountered some weird dudes on the trail.
We obviously know that people have been killed on trails, unfortunately, women. And I just, the. The incidence is so low, it's such a tiny percentage for me. I, you know, a.
If you're going to carry a gun out there, you better damn well know how to use it and how to use it well and how to use it under pressure, how to use it in an instant. Like, you need to have full mastery of that device if you're going to be carrying it with you.
And so I think most people know that under pressure they're not, you know, I would be much more likely to shoot myself. There's statistics out there, right, that unless you know how to do this shit, you're probably shooting yourself in the foot. Paging Ted Cruz. But.
Or no, it wasn't Ted Cruz. Who was it? It was. It was.
Colin True
00:29:21.930 - 00:29:23.330
I like to believe that, you know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:29:23.330 - 00:29:26.630
Why not just page Ted Cruz? We should. Ye. Yeah, yeah.
Colin True
00:29:27.030 - 00:29:30.150
Then he's gonna come after us for libel or something because we said that he's got.
Shawnté Salabert
00:29:30.230 - 00:30:13.110
He's got other libels to. To pursue. I don't remember who it was, but, you know, that's just my theory behind it all. I'm like, listen, I.
Yeah, I could spend all this time worrying about stuff, but I'd rather sit there and strengthen my Other skills like my wilderness first aid like understanding map and compass and how to navigate out of a bad situation carrying a sat device, taking self defense classes. Like there's all sorts of different things I do to enhance my own safety when I'm out there.
And I just keep coming back to the idea that for me a gun doesn't enhance my safety and I don't necessarily feel safer around other people with guns if I'm being honest. Except for if there were polar bears around. Not that I want to shoot polar bears. I do want to say that I don't know you're only going up being shot.
Okay.
Colin True
00:30:15.030 - 00:31:13.020
I think the problem where I struggle with it is it's impossible at this point to be just objective about guns anymore. Like you know, the thing is about guns that I, I, I, I'm not an anti gun person. I am a, you know, a adamant gun, you know, smart gun law person. Yeah.
And you know the other cultures have shown the ability to people you can own firearms while limiting the issues we have in this country. And that's the, that's a real point of frustration for me. So like my knee jerk reaction on any gun story at this point is like no, no more guns.
Right. That's just kind of like where I end up on it because it's so frustrating.
I see the attract if you can kind of like filter through that and be like I understand if somebody was feeling like ins and wanted to have a level of protection and some reassurance. I see why people go down this road.
To your point about the level of mastery though, it is like, you know, okay, so now you have a gun does I mean you're going to have to have it on your hip at all times just in case something happens you've had at the bottom of your pack, in which case when the shit goes down you're like hold on a second, let me fish out my gun so I can defend myself.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:13.020 - 00:31:17.460
Hey grizzly, can you just hold off a second? Remove your fang from my arm. Yeah.
Colin True
00:31:17.460 - 00:31:26.680
And then, and it is kind of, I imagine it's in that same camp of like well if you're going to carry a gun while you're backpacking, you probably should never get in the ocean again the rest of your life. Because a shark might fight.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:26.680 - 00:31:27.560
You should just get a harpoon.
Colin True
00:31:27.560 - 00:31:28.840
I imagine the odds are similar.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:28.920 - 00:31:30.040
That's why you get a harpoon.
Colin True
00:31:30.040 - 00:31:31.640
Yeah, right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:32.040 - 00:31:35.600
You just get a harpoon and have a different weapon holster. You know they, I'm sure they make.
Colin True
00:31:35.600 - 00:31:39.120
Them a weapon for every so every.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:39.120 - 00:31:47.480
Circumstance there's an American company in particular with probably like a backwards flag on their product that makes that a harpoon holster. For preppers.
Colin True
00:31:47.480 - 00:31:47.960
Probably.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:47.960 - 00:31:53.130
Yeah. That's for ocean preppers. It's a very specific niche market. It's a real specialty research op.
Colin True
00:31:53.130 - 00:32:00.090
That's what OP stood for. Actually, no one really knows that about op. It wasn't ocean Pacific, it was ocean preppers, underwater bunkers.
Shawnté Salabert
00:32:00.090 - 00:32:02.250
It's just like buying bulk bonito flakes.
Colin True
00:32:04.970 - 00:32:37.990
But so, you know, and I don't mind. I actually, I liked Maddie's. It was a great article. I love the way it was written. I love how thoughtful it was.
I love that she referenced other people who have talked about this as well. We actually reached out to Maddie. She's apparently out of the office for a few weeks.
We'd love to have her on to kind of talk a little bit more about it and offer a little more context to it, because I'd be interest. Interested in hearing the two of you. As you know, I'm not really a backpacker. Right. So they kind of like go through the scenarios.
Maybe she would be asking you certain questions that might make you stop and think as well. But it's funny also that that is a recurring question that you tend to get when you're teaching classes and things like that.
Shawnté Salabert
00:32:37.990 - 00:33:32.880
Yeah, all the time.
I mean, in general, people still look at women doing things solo, whether it's backpacking, whether it's backcountry skiing, you know, doing bike packing trips, whatever. Now, you know, it is one of those topics that I think think again constantly. Are you afraid? There's a.
There's a woman named Nicole Snell who does outdoor specific self defense classes, and she's done TEDx talks and things like that. She's got a great social media presence. So I think anybody who's interested in thinking about safety on trail is. She's a good one to follow.
Just for some really practical advice. She's not a fear monger.
She's really about empowering and learning so that when you're out there, you can kind of drop some of those fears, knowing that you're ready if it comes at you. So. Right, yeah, that's where I land on it right now. But yeah.
Hey, Maddie, if you want to, you know, reach out to us, respond to Colin's, you know, email plea, and we'll.
Colin True
00:33:32.880 - 00:33:35.120
Have a chat when you're back.
Shawnté Salabert
00:33:35.120 - 00:33:37.200
When you're back. And when I'm back from your.
Colin True
00:33:37.680 - 00:33:47.190
From the Four Way, which apparently you're now carrying a gun to wow with the. With the stt Laden koalas. What is happening? There's a lot crazy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:33:47.750 - 00:33:51.990
Someone is gonna send us hate mail for this episode. At least one person. Probably seven.
Colin True
00:33:52.710 - 00:33:53.670
I hope so.
Shawnté Salabert
00:33:53.910 - 00:33:57.350
STDs, guns, poop.
Colin True
00:33:58.390 - 00:34:02.430
Just. We'll just keep saying those things. Those are like, you know, keywords to get, you know, for Google, you know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:02.430 - 00:34:04.070
Owen's never gonna be again.
Colin True
00:34:04.230 - 00:34:30.159

Shawnté Salabert
00:34:30.319 - 00:34:33.279
Yes. Yeah, I got the email today. I'm so excited. I'm going to.
Colin True
00:34:33.279 - 00:34:33.959
Oh, good. There you go.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:33.959 - 00:34:39.429
Yeah, I'm going to take them as my. My water slash town slash camp slash. When I don't feel like wearing my shoes.
Colin True
00:34:40.140 - 00:34:43.180
Shoes could do a little bit of everything in the. In this lemon switch.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:43.180 - 00:34:46.060
We're gonna see. I'm gonna put them pretty hard to the test, so we'll see how they do.
Colin True
00:34:51.180 - 00:35:30.590
All right, it's time for the parting shot.
And so my parting shot today is for those of us who like to go outside and those of us who basically define ourselves by our outdoorsy pursuits and thus think that everyone should go outside, too.
And there are two things that happened to me recently that made me reflect on this notion, and I want to address it here on the pod because, you see, especially outside has kind of developed their whole platform now about. We're just trying to get more people outside. It's like. It's just a thing, right? It's like we're trying to get.
And I understand on surface, that sounds relatively benign, but here, let me explain what I'm talking about. So the first thing that happened to me was I came across a post in the introvert subreddit. It's a subreddit for introverts.
Shawnté Salabert
00:35:30.590 - 00:35:31.550
And why are you in it?
Colin True
00:35:32.250 - 00:35:34.930
Well, I was looking for. I was just doing random searches for things.
Shawnté Salabert
00:35:34.930 - 00:35:36.490
What is it like on the other side?
Colin True
00:35:38.570 - 00:36:04.570
The title of this post was I hate going outside. What's the problem? I'm like, all right, this is great. I'm already in on whoever this person is.
So basically this person was stating that their preference is to stay at home and do things that they like to do and that others need to respect that choice. And the line in this post that stood out to me the most was, I'm quoting from it. We all live different lives.
We all have different tastes, different stuff in life makes us happy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:36:04.570 - 00:36:06.490
Deep right.
Colin True
00:36:07.450 - 00:37:13.130
And the second was when my daughter and I were going out to breakfast at one of our favorite spots just the other day. And outside there were two older men who tried to stop stop us to talk about Jesus and how Jesus could help to save our souls.
Now, I've long hated it when people of faith go out of their way to recruit others. I feel that talking the vulnerable into your point of view, regardless of what that point of view is, is wrong.
People are better off making informed decisions that benefit their lives. But the whole rhetoric of trying to get people to go outside, I feel like is kind of in the same camp. We don't know what makes every individual tick.
Is it undeniable that going outside and getting fresh air and engaging in nature is good for us? Yes. But that could take a million different forms.
And based on the marketing I see, for those who harp on the we just want you to go outside message, there is a pretty particular way that those folks want you to go outside. End of the point of that Reddit poster. There is no one size fits all way of living.
If you like chilling in your house and making art and reading books or after binge watching Love island, who the hell am I to tell you that your life is unfulfilled because you're not doing it the way that I do it. And actually the last thing I want. This is a long parting shot. The last point I want to make.
Shawnté Salabert
00:37:13.130 - 00:37:14.930
It sure is, Colin. Keep shaking your fist.
Colin True
00:37:15.410 - 00:37:46.590
Never mind. Listen, I feel like also an outdoor lifestyle is a slow evolution.
My journey kind of started out as hanging out by creeks with friends, and then I went on a hike and then I went canoeing. And then, and then, and then, and then I was standing on top of Mount Rainier. Right.
A lot of and thens that kind of lead to like these kind of bigger and better these bigger things.
So what we should be doing is encouraging people to discover what makes them tick, inspire confidence and good decision making and the rest will take care of itself. And maybe that'll lead to some people going outside when they figure that out. That's my parting shot.
Shawnté Salabert
00:37:46.910 - 00:38:28.490
Wow. Yeah, you really give an air of like old man shakes fist at sky. But I can See where you're going with this?
I think that's the thing is like how do you open up space for people to figure out what their thing is? And their thing may not be your thing. So. And that's okay if it's not.
I do think we all like what the definition of being outside or getting outside is way more expansive than we make it. You kind of alluded to this, right? That there's this narrow vision we often talk about here in la.
Like they put money into the park systems to for instance, make longer tables because a lot of families here are multi gen and they want to do picnics and stuff. And so that's like, that's great. That's facilitating them getting outside in the way that works for them.
People do baptisms in the rivers, you know, stuff like that.
Colin True
00:38:28.720 - 00:39:11.230
That. So yeah, yeah. Not. I swear I'm this, I'm trying to take a shot at outside. But it's a good example, right?
Hey, I kind of like, no, they, we want, we just want more people to go outside. But then, okay, well let me look at what the products you are sending out into the world. And it's pink bike and climbing and powder. It's the act.
It's stuff that I like to do. But so that to me is saying that you want people to get outside and do these things because that's what you're selling.
And it's like, well, I, if I say I want people to go outside, then like, you know, go sit. Like Justin and I read an email once and someone's like, I just want to go sit and outside in a, in a chair and enjoy nature. Like, great, do it.
Go, go sit on a bench. That's being outside and that's fulfilling. It doesn't need to be one way. And that's where I bristle, I guess.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:11.230 - 00:39:17.110
I mean, let the people pet the bison, then I guess that's what they want and so they want to be outside.
Colin True
00:39:17.750 - 00:39:28.840
Listen, if you understand the consequences that are coming your way, have at it. Hey, have at it, man. Maybe, maybe you're a bison whisperer. And who am I to say that you're not? The bison's gonna win.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:29.160 - 00:39:30.120
Yeah, I mean, but as long as.
Colin True
00:39:30.120 - 00:39:34.360
You understand that any, any parting shot before you leave the show for a month.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:34.920 - 00:39:36.120
Wow, I feel like I should be.
Colin True
00:39:36.120 - 00:39:37.640
Crying every Monday afternoon.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:39.160 - 00:39:45.640
Well, Colin, you know, we'll see you. You and producer Dave encouraged me to record some voice memos while I'm out there.
Colin True
00:39:45.640 - 00:39:46.680
Oh yeah, that's right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:46.760 - 00:39:55.330
So maybe it'll be and you can just probably see if I do a couple of them, you'll see the deterioration of my mental state state along with my physical state. The longer being outside.
Colin True
00:39:55.330 - 00:39:57.930
I hate this. I want to be. I want to be watching Love Island.
Shawnté Salabert
00:39:58.090 - 00:40:22.250
The best thing is, no, I would be watching below deck. If I'm gonna expose myself, that's fine. You know, I. The best thing is when I'm out there, I take video.
I take recorded notes for myself when I'm working. So I'm working on a book and so I take recorded notes.
And it's funny listening back sometimes and I could just tell like the days where I'm riding a high, I'm like, that was the best day. I love the alpine. I like, like looking at meadows and butterflies and marmots dancing around.
Colin True
00:40:22.250 - 00:40:23.290
Life is wonderful.
Shawnté Salabert
00:40:23.650 - 00:40:45.890
So extraordinary. And then there's other days that are like, why have I chosen this life? I just want to end it all.
And I don't know, I just got, you know, I'm doing this thing with Steve Casmiro from, you know, our good pal Steven from Adventure Journal is doing a project called Field Journal Collective. I just got a field journal in the mail that I am going to be carrying with me.
Colin True
00:40:46.130 - 00:40:47.530
We willed this into existence.
Shawnté Salabert
00:40:47.530 - 00:41:01.150
No pressure. It's just New York Times writer John Branch and then I believe Jim Musso, the artist is the other person in here. And so cool.
It's just going to be my sweaty, like tear stained, scrambling Scribble Scrabble after this. It's going to be great.
Colin True
00:41:01.710 - 00:41:03.870
Well, Shantae, poop smears, you know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:41:03.870 - 00:41:10.190
No, you did that. I didn't, I didn't say that. Oh, and just know that. All right. You want to close this thing out.
Colin True
00:41:10.750 - 00:41:28.790
Well, that's, that's an excellent parting shot. No, listen, hey, listen, we're very, very excited, very excited for our voice memos from, from the trail. Excited to hear about how it was out there.
Very excited to eventually read this book. You've been telling me about this book for, I feel like years now at this point.
So pretty soon you're gonna have to come up with a new excuse about why you can't like. Ah, shit, I can't. That book thing, did it work out?
Shawnté Salabert
00:41:28.790 - 00:41:29.790
I'll find something new.
Colin True
00:41:31.390 - 00:41:54.030
All right, that's the show. Like Shantae said, we want your emails.
Send them to myrockfightmail.com the Rock Fight's a production of Rock Fight LLC for Shante Salibair, who is now, as you hear this. No, she's not on the JMT yet. Almost on the jmt. I'm Colin True. Thanks for listening.
And Kristen makes his here to sing Shantae out to the JMT with the rock fight fight song. We'll see you next time. Rock fighters.
