Episode Transcript:

Colin True

00:00:00.720 - 00:02:04.870

Don't let our big time production value and celebrity names fool you. Looking at you, producer Dave But Rockbyte, LLC is a small business and growing brand.

And even though we have our own consigliere, he advises on other matters. We've got to consult a lawyer every now and then on the legal structures that every business needs.

But for a small business like ours, the cost to hire general counsel or pay a retainer is a non starter. So what's an outdoorsy founder to do? I mean, come on, we're not flashing that outside money. Enter Konatus Council.

They can help your business with fractional general counsel and legal services, from strategy consulting to advocacy and government affairs to real world implementation for outdoor recreation industry businesses. Forrest over at Kanatas Council has helped Rock Fight navigate some of these areas.

And let me tell you, knowing someone has your back means you can focus on running your business. I mean, he had at least three edits to this read to quote unquote, protect us from ourselves. I mean, that's what I'm talking about.

Forest cares just as much about the outdoors and the outdoor industry as our listeners. So, got questions? Konatuscouncil.com to get in touch with Forest. The first six hours are free. Wait, what? What? I can't say that.

Oh, initial consultations are free. Okay, fine. Welcome to the Rock Fight, where we speak our truth, slay sacred cows, and sometimes agree to disagree.

This is an outdoor podcast that aims for the head.

I'm Colin True, and today Shantae Salibair is back after a week off and she's here to talk some recent headlines that have come out of the outdoor adventure community. But before we get to that, did you miss Monday's episode of the Rock Flight? How about Tuesday's newest open container?

Who else tends to your podcast needs as much as Rock Flight llc? No one. Go get called up on all of our pods and be sure to click follow wherever you're listening. Lastly, are you headed to Switchback in June?

If so, be sure to put the Rock Fight live on your agenda for Tuesday, June 17th at 5:00. And the Trailheads Theater. I'll be there with Shantae and Owen. Producer Dave. It's gonna be the event of the summer.

That's at the event of the summer, so do not miss it. And all right, stick around. We'll be right back.

Chris DeMakes

Colin True

00:03:38.850 - 00:03:45.850

And now back to the show. Shantae, you're back. You had a week off. Got all loaded up on Wisconsin cheese.

Shawnté Salabert

00:03:45.850 - 00:03:46.530

Oh, yeah.

Colin True

00:03:47.010 - 00:03:48.370

Did you have some new Glarus?

Shawnté Salabert

00:03:48.370 - 00:04:05.150

I did. I didn't. They don't have a gluten free variety, but I went to Culver's several times.

Is that anybody, if anybody knows Culver's, that is the home of frozen custard, if you ask me. And we cannot get it here in California. California. It hasn't made it this far west. Like it's stopped in Utah.

Colin True

00:04:05.630 - 00:04:08.510

There's probably some preservative in there that we don't allow in California.

Shawnté Salabert

00:04:08.990 - 00:04:15.310

Probably it's got lead in it or something. I don't know. Whatever it is, I, I am into that delicious dairy toxin.

Colin True

00:04:16.350 - 00:04:30.550

It's so good. Dude, your toxins are the best. While you were. But while you were back, you know, I guess you're back east. You're.

You're east of here middle eating Culver's and toxic custard. You ended up winning our, our, our outdoor draft. You won.

Shawnté Salabert

00:04:30.550 - 00:05:19.320

We did. I, I. That. I swear. A, I did not rig that. And B, I still can't believe it. It feels like a real upset. Colin. I don't know who to thank.

I'm gonna start with my mom for, you know, feeding me all that custard and the people for voting for me and my sense of nomadic, like, never being satisfied for living in all these different places.

So thank you to all of you who voted for me for whatever weird reason you did I appreciate you and I hope that at least a few people came away from the episode feeling like, oh, you know what we're gonna like? We're gonna give some props to some of these cities for their outdoor access.

So I hope I maybe changed a few minds and got people to think about em in a different way.

Colin True

00:05:20.040 - 00:05:24.760

I should have known you were gonna pontificate and have, like, playoff music at the Oscars. Jesus.

Shawnté Salabert

00:05:24.760 - 00:05:36.710

Of course. Come on. Yeah, I want the strings. I want the band, like, kicking in. I want to start talking a little faster. And I gotta thank my agent.

But also, Colin, you didn't say. We didn't. Is there a prize? Like, what do I win?

Colin True

00:05:37.430 - 00:05:39.510

No, because I lost. So there's no prize.

Shawnté Salabert

00:05:40.150 - 00:05:41.310

What was the prize gonna be?

Colin True

00:05:41.310 - 00:05:48.710

If you won, you win. That's the prize. I was recording some open container stuff with Schnitzbot earlier, and I'm like, man, we lost. He's like, yeah, how did that happen?

I'm like, I don't know.

Shawnté Salabert

00:05:52.470 - 00:05:56.550

My apologies to both of you, but especially to Doug, who also do not apologize for winning.

Colin True

00:05:56.550 - 00:05:57.030

You played.

Shawnté Salabert

00:05:57.190 - 00:06:05.140

If Doug had not taken North Conway, I feel like my. My poll would have been even more powerful because then I wouldn't have had to go for New York, which I think threw some people off.

Colin True

00:06:05.140 - 00:06:15.780

So North Conway with Jackson was. Was a little on the cliche side, having both of those towns, that's in hindsight for him. But he still came in second.

I finished dead last, so I can't really shit talk Doug either.

Shawnté Salabert

00:06:15.780 - 00:06:19.260

So I thought. I thought San Diego was a great pick. I will give that to you.

Colin True

00:06:19.260 - 00:06:27.140

Thank you. In hindsight, I should have taken Los Angeles. Just. I should have known you. I should have caught Blossoms.

I don't know why, like, that would have been so good. Of course she was going to take.

Shawnté Salabert

00:06:27.140 - 00:06:29.980

L. A. I absolutely knew what I was doing when I went for Fayetteville first.

Colin True

00:06:30.160 - 00:07:25.670

So you did. Yes. Well, that was the thing. That division or category was thin, so that was definitely the right call.

Well, our top stories today are presented by your hub for Ultralight gear Garage Growing gear. Head to garagegrowngear.com and check them out. And we start today with a couple of endurance sports stories.

This one, I think you sent this one to me. This is spectacular.

There's a new app called Fake My Run, and it's available to runners, or would be runners who want to participate in the social ecosystem of Strava, but they don't want to do the hard work.

So according to an article in the Daily Mail, Fake My Run quote lets users create custom running routes that look realistic on fitness tracking platforms like Strava. End quote. And then, by the way, this is not the first falsified results kind of platform. Last fall it was also reported via the Daily Mail.

They seem to have a thing for this. I don't know why they keep. I haven't seen this covered anywhere else.

Shawnté Salabert

00:07:25.670 - 00:07:26.910

They love saucy news.

Colin True

00:07:28.490 - 00:07:39.210

Apparently there are runners who are paying quote mules like to run their routes for them. So, like, hey, Shantae, can you go run like a 10k and then send me your results? And I'm going to upload it. Like, I read the 10k.

Shawnté Salabert

00:07:39.370 - 00:07:47.130

The best thing is I'd probably run it slower than you. So would you just gently jog this for me? Oh, hell yeah, I will, Colin.

Colin True

00:07:48.170 - 00:07:55.810

But. So what do we think? Is this insane? Is it ingenious? Is it another word that starts with in? I mean, it's sort of like kind of both.

Shawnté Salabert

00:07:55.810 - 00:07:59.120

Like this totally inglorious inexperience.

Colin True

00:08:00.710 - 00:08:01.710

Yes. Right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:08:01.710 - 00:08:14.190

In. Interesting.

No, I, you know, I think it's really interesting that people still put this much stock into social media apps like Strava that they've got to fake their efforts like nobody, nobody gives a shit.

Colin True

00:08:14.190 - 00:08:14.830

Unbelievable.

Shawnté Salabert

00:08:14.830 - 00:08:37.610

It's just so wild to me.

I mean, I personally, the only thing I think this is good for is if you hire somebody who's really good at doing those drawings that people do, like making a big dick, something like that with your run. I think that because I don't have the patience to map that stuff out.

So if, if I'm to be spending my hard earned money to fake something, I want someone to make a real cool picture with their run. Like, please, anybody, just.

Colin True

00:08:37.610 - 00:08:45.650

That's a good point. I connect those dots a lot more quickly than just the results or getting the kudos or whatever it is. You know, like the dick picture. Yeah, exactly.

Shawnté Salabert

00:08:45.650 - 00:09:04.190

Can you make a clown? Could you make my face in the run?

I'm really good at like squares, maybe a rhombus depending on the place I'm running, but that's like an oval, like a lumpy, like an amoeba. But that's about all I can do. I wish I could make a shape. This goes back to me being a woman and wishing I could pee in the snow.

Colin True

00:09:04.190 - 00:09:08.190

But you know, you can pee in the snow. You are allowed to pee in the snow.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:08.190 - 00:09:10.350

You know, like, peed in the snow.

Colin True

00:09:10.350 - 00:09:13.550

Like, I'm sorry, women. No, no, no. You go find a bathroom.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:14.270 - 00:09:24.910

I feel like I should rephrase that what I meant to say was pee my name in the snow. But I think I could try for maybe an S. But I think that's all the lower body strength I'd have.

Colin True

00:09:25.470 - 00:09:29.830

Frankly, if even if you did have a penis, your name would be difficult. It's a lot of letters. You have an accent.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:29.830 - 00:09:32.470

An accent? Yeah. Cause you have to, like, stop the flow for a second.

Colin True

00:09:32.470 - 00:09:35.210

Let again, you got to pinch it off. Yeah.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:35.370 - 00:09:43.610

Maybe I need to just. Maybe I'll hire a Strava Fake my run person to make my name, but wait till the winter. And I want them to, like, pee run it.

Colin True

00:09:44.170 - 00:09:45.450

Fake. Fake my pee name.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:45.450 - 00:09:46.210

Fake my pee.

Colin True

00:09:46.210 - 00:09:47.290

I bet someone would pay for it.

Shawnté Salabert

00:09:47.290 - 00:09:49.530

Someone would be. There's a fetish for that.

Colin True

00:09:49.610 - 00:10:16.230

It never stops to. Never ceases to amaze me, the lengths people will go to things. Like, I.

I feel like if you're really faithful in a relationship for, like, for me anyway, is it because I'm really faithful, or is it because when you start to really kind of piece together how you need to cheat on your partner, man, it's a lot of. I never, like. It's just like, okay, so now I gotta, like, pick a night. I gotta meet somebody. I gotta go out with that person.

I gotta, like, make a plan to get away with it. I mean, it's just like, at some point, aren't you, like, I'll just get a divorce.

Shawnté Salabert

00:10:16.230 - 00:10:35.830

I can barely, like, lie to my mom. As a kid, the worst thing I ever lied to my mom about was, like, what I had for dinner at the Boys and Girls Club.

And she caught me because I'm such a bad liar. She's like, what did you have for dinner tonight? I'm like, ooh, I made up a whole Thanksgiving spread.

And the truth was, that night, they didn't have hot dinner. So it's peanut butter and jelly. And she called the club because whatever I said sounded so fantastic. I was like, henry the Eighth.

Colin True

00:10:35.830 - 00:10:36.230

Amazing.

Shawnté Salabert

00:10:36.930 - 00:10:43.170

And she called the club, and they're like, we have PBJ tonight. So I got grounded, like, one of only two times in my childhood I ever got grounded.

Colin True

00:10:43.410 - 00:10:47.770

Because you're so just. And you could have just said easily, PB and J. I'm just. You would have been right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:10:47.770 - 00:10:55.810

I can't. Yeah, that was the. I'm bad at lying. So you know that 99.999% of the time I'm telling the truth. I could never fake my run.

Colin True

00:10:56.370 - 00:11:13.490

Well, that's what. Think about the lengths you have to go to and the result you must be. So what do you.

You are so just needing those clicks or that the recognition of somebody that you did something that you're gonna pay. They're paying people not even pay for the app, but you're paying a mule to like send you their results.

Shawnté Salabert

00:11:13.490 - 00:11:29.130

I just want to know who's doing it. So if anybody out there knows anybody using this, if you're using it, we will talk about it anonymously. We'll give you a code name. Okay.

And then, and then we'll share your story on the rock fight. Please, please email us 100myrockfightmail and if.

Colin True

00:11:29.130 - 00:11:31.930

You don't want to talk to us, you can send us like a voice memo. I mean like just we would.

Shawnté Salabert

00:11:31.930 - 00:11:37.130

Voice memo. Yes. Tell us. You can, you can use one of those transformers to change your voice. Be like, I.

Colin True

00:11:37.130 - 00:11:44.150

Well, then I had reached out to me on Strava and I had. I charged him $150amile.

Shawnté Salabert

00:11:45.110 - 00:11:47.270

Wait, maybe this should be my side hustle.

Colin True

00:11:48.230 - 00:11:52.870

I'm guessing it's probably like an only fans thing where if you saw what they're earning, you're like, you know, you know me.

Shawnté Salabert

00:11:52.870 - 00:11:59.270

Maybe, maybe I could compromise your morals to make money off of it. I'd love to make money off of your compromised morals.

Colin True

00:12:00.310 - 00:12:05.870

Yeah, I, I would. Absolutely. I mean, I really would. I genuinely like to hear from somebody. If you are a mule.

Shawnté Salabert

00:12:05.870 - 00:12:07.350

This is all I want. If you're a mule.

Colin True

00:12:07.510 - 00:12:09.190

Myrock fight@gmail.com.

Shawnté Salabert

00:12:09.420 - 00:12:13.420

Whether you're a mule or just somebody who's using this service, I just, I want to know about your life.

Colin True

00:12:13.660 - 00:12:23.020

Why? Yeah, it's genuinely intriguing to me. I'm not surprised given the world we live in and what like things like OnlyFans and things like that existing.

This makes sense, but it's also like.

Shawnté Salabert

00:12:23.020 - 00:12:26.060

Oh my God, like you can hire someone for everything. I guess.

Colin True

00:12:26.460 - 00:12:43.820

I guess so.

The next endurance story we had was per people.com, and we have a new mom who won a 100k ultramarathon despite starting 30 minutes after everyone else and stopping to breastfeed her 6 month old baby at aid stations along the way. And a post on Instagram, Stephanie Case.

Shawnté Salabert

00:12:45.020 - 00:12:50.300

Colin, just in case you're wondering what the was, Colin just blinded himself with his beauty ring light.

Colin True

00:12:51.260 - 00:12:52.140

God damn it.

Shawnté Salabert

00:12:52.780 - 00:12:54.700

Oh, I wait, is it the headlamp?

Colin True

00:12:54.860 - 00:13:00.700

I said post on and it went to on instead. It's coast on. That's what it coast on.

Shawnté Salabert

00:13:01.100 - 00:13:05.540

Too much technology, Colin. This is why I just go with the analog boob lamp above my Head.

Colin True

00:13:05.540 - 00:13:13.430

How am I blinded now? All right, can barely read. Anyway, in a post on Instagram. Now I have to leave this in.

Shawnté Salabert

00:13:14.470 - 00:13:22.230

Colin keeps getting blinded by his headlamp that he's using as a ring light. Your skin does look glowing though.

Colin True

00:13:22.709 - 00:13:50.710

I got to talk to. I gotta get Mr. Julia coast and say no, no more. All right.

In a post on Instagram, Stephanie Case posted that she had no expectations for the race, which is why she started late and cannot believe she had won when she crossed the finish line. You know, more shocking to me than the result of the race itself or her winning was the lack of negative comments on the Instagram post. I kind of.

I'm like, let me look through here. I guarantee you somebody's gonna say, I really couldn't. I mean, I went pretty far down. I didn't see anything.

Shawnté Salabert

00:13:51.030 - 00:14:22.910

I mean, Colin, women are superheroes. That's all I could think of when I saw this story. I was like, I had to read. Then read again, like, she did what? But you know what?

It honestly made me think about. And this is tangential, but you know me, I love a tangent, but it just made about.

It made me think about somebody like Allyson Felix, who, if you're familiar with track and field or you're Olympic nerd. She's a record breaking Olympic track and field star and she wrote this killer op ed some years ago exposing.

So she was a Nike sponsored athlete and she basically exposed their shitty stance on working with pregnant athletes.

Colin True

00:14:23.150 - 00:14:23.590

Oh, right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:14:23.590 - 00:14:37.660

Yeah. And she ended up like later on testifying in Congress about like maternal mortality rates. Such a badass.

And it just makes me think about how many women. You know, we still haven't gotten to a place where we think women can do it all, even though women are constantly doing it all.

Colin True

00:14:37.660 - 00:14:38.740

So, right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:14:38.740 - 00:14:51.980

Kudos to Stephanie Case because that is badass. I mean, winning it 100k ultra is badass in itself, but like, what an incredible way to start a race.

Like, oh, I'm just gonna take my time, breastfeed my baby, and then I'll just go for a little jaunt, see what happens.

Colin True

00:14:52.220 - 00:14:56.860

Is it that impressive or is it more of a statement on how bad the other runners were?

Shawnté Salabert

00:14:58.220 - 00:15:01.140

I'm gonna give her some credit here. I think she probably just hauled ass.

Colin True

00:15:01.140 - 00:15:03.980

But was she like, jesus, you people were slow.

Shawnté Salabert

00:15:03.980 - 00:15:05.800

Like, I was breastfee a baby.

Colin True

00:15:06.120 - 00:15:08.360

I was a half hour late. I'm breastfeeding over here.

Shawnté Salabert

00:15:08.360 - 00:15:14.200

Baby could beat you. Or there's something really incredible in her breast milk. I have no idea. I have to see how fast the baby is.

Colin True

00:15:14.200 - 00:15:20.440

Oh no. You just see I was all like excited about the story. Now you're like I'm waiting for like the, the the ped schedule to.

Shawnté Salabert

00:15:20.999 - 00:15:22.920

No just like natural endorphins.

Colin True

00:15:23.320 - 00:15:25.000

Stephanie, your child is quite muscular.

Shawnté Salabert

00:15:26.200 - 00:15:30.040

Six pack already. Look at the cavs on that kid.

Colin True

00:15:30.680 - 00:15:36.560

No, that was but just great. And I loved. She was just really seemed genuinely surprised that she won. So like what an incredible day for her.

Shawnté Salabert

00:15:36.560 - 00:15:36.920

T.R.

Colin True

00:15:38.180 - 00:15:40.420

Colin True

00:16:21.210 - 00:16:26.570

Like to apologize to our sponsor for my co host not reading the copy accurately.

Shawnté Salabert

00:16:27.050 - 00:16:39.640

I'm a rebel. I could not say. You cannot just put three GS next to each other and expect me who. This is my first ad read. I have no. I can't say 3G.

It's just gonna like I'm gonna malfunction. Mouths don't move like that.

Colin True

00:16:40.920 - 00:16:41.680

Ggg.

Shawnté Salabert

00:16:41.680 - 00:16:43.320

No, it just sounds like it's kind.

Colin True

00:16:43.320 - 00:16:45.160

Of like saying in Jiji. It's kind of like that.

Shawnté Salabert

00:16:45.480 - 00:16:50.160

We already know that I can't do that. So I try. All right.

Colin True

00:16:50.160 - 00:17:47.300

Our next story is presented by Oboz, who loves hiking. And as the cupid of the outdoors, Oboz wants to help. You love hiking just as much as you as they do. So according.

I think you sent me this one as well.

According to nbcnews.com last month, two hikers in the Adirondacks had to call 911 to report that a third member of their party had died while the group was hiking Cascade Peak. But it turned out that they were mistaken that the third member of their party had died. Well, how could they have made a mistake of that magnitude?

It's because they were tripping balls on hallucinogenic mushrooms. The hikers also reported that they were lost, but officials later determined, quote, that they were in an altered mental state.

So what's the best the lesson Here, right? You're out there, you're eating mushrooms. You think you're a third person is dead. You dial 911. Is it to choose your trail drugs more carefully?

Do you stick to weed and whiskey? Understand the difference between micro and macro dosing? Where do you go with this?

Shawnté Salabert

00:17:47.300 - 00:18:20.580

I mean, I think you need to do your drugs in flat places. You probably need to have an observer if you're going to be out in the wild doing this. I mean, personally, I, like, I've.

I've done, you know, gentle hallucinogenics in the desert, which feels like the right place for it. But honestly, like, I'm in enough of an altered state when I'm out there.

Just absolutely, especially on a hot day or if I'm doing a bunch of altitude or whatever, I don't need. I don't need drugs. I don't need to add to that altered state. Like, I'm high on nature, but also my own exhaustion. So I'm good.

Guys, this is not where I want to do my drugs is in the Adirondacks.

Colin True

00:18:21.610 - 00:18:33.050

I totally agree. I think I want to call on the good folks at Point Grey Pictures, which is Seth Rogen's production company.

I think we need to have a comedy go into production later this year if possible.

Shawnté Salabert

00:18:33.050 - 00:18:34.250

Oh, yeah, I'm ready now.

Colin True

00:18:35.530 - 00:18:39.170

Picture this in a scenario. I'm imagining that the third person just passed out.

Shawnté Salabert

00:18:39.170 - 00:18:49.620

Maybe they had to have just passed out. And the other two are tripping balls and they're like, oh, dude, Bill's dead. Oh, yeah. Well, Listen, Seth, call 91 1.

Rock Fight Radio!

00:18:49.620 - 00:18:50.220

He's dead.

Shawnté Salabert

00:18:50.620 - 00:19:05.900

Yeah, you have the one freaking out. You have the one that's so stoned they can barely talk.

So I think you and I obviously need to be, you know, executive producers here, but as long as we don't have to kick in money for it, we're just producers in name and, like, you know, cachet maybe.

Colin True

00:19:05.900 - 00:19:07.420

Right. You want. You want a writing credit?

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:07.740 - 00:19:18.700

Story by credit? I mean, really? Yeah, I think we could write it together. They could produce it.

I think Seth, you know, hey, Seth and I have a connection because he does pottery. I do pottery.

Colin True

00:19:19.180 - 00:19:19.660

Love it.

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:19.660 - 00:19:20.620

I mean, there we go.

Colin True

00:19:21.340 - 00:19:26.540

Frankly, I would do it for free if I could get a cameo in season two of the studio. Not that I don't know, like, no one knows who I am, but like.

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:26.540 - 00:19:28.300

But they will once you're on season two.

Colin True

00:19:28.620 - 00:19:29.340

That's right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:30.140 - 00:19:32.540

After you perform live at Switchback Spring.

Colin True

00:19:33.020 - 00:19:34.580

That's good callback.

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:34.580 - 00:19:35.580

That's right. That's right.

Colin True

00:19:36.620 - 00:19:52.170

Yeah. This is a good one. I mean, there was a very short article. I was kind of. And this is a lot. Yeah, yeah.

Justin and I have had this conversation before where it's like so many of these. Like somebody gets lost and then found and it's like, yeah, okay. There's so much more I want to know here. There's never a follow up.

Shawnté Salabert

00:19:52.170 - 00:20:09.300

No, it's. Yeah. Why is there never. This is the thing. You know what, you know what we should have done? We should have gone to Reddit.

You know, the thing is like, the people take a quick look, probably if they did not add details, they came up with details. Like somebody fleshed out the story for us on Reddit. They were probably high when they.

Colin True

00:20:09.300 - 00:20:11.660

Do you want to take a quick look to see if there's anything out there?

Shawnté Salabert

00:20:11.660 - 00:20:12.420

I think we should.

Colin True

00:20:12.980 - 00:20:16.100

All right, go. You want to. Are you a Reddit? Are you a seasoned Redditor?

Shawnté Salabert

00:20:16.100 - 00:20:41.960

I don't think I would call myself that. No, I've used Reddit. Usually what happens is I'll Google something, I'll be like, you know what I did? Actually, you'll love this.

When I had my recent corn incident in between the middle toes on my left foot, I Googled.

Now when I Google things where I don't just want to see what I don't know, the CDC has to say because I can't trust anything anymore that the government puts out, I'll just google like, like corn in between toes plus Reddit.

Colin True

00:20:41.960 - 00:20:42.280

Right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:20:42.520 - 00:20:46.920

Because, you know, who do I trust more than the cdc? The people of Reddit.

Colin True

00:20:47.400 - 00:20:55.000

Actually, Dagendorf, on the Adirondacks Reddit thread has the. The comment said, usually I just trip on rocks and roots.

Shawnté Salabert

00:20:55.880 - 00:20:57.320

Zank, why didn't we think of that?

Colin True

00:20:57.320 - 00:21:07.560

Pretty good. Pretty good. Nj I'm assuming that's New Jersey.

New Jersey Stoner girl writes, I love hiking and I love mushrooms, but I do not love hiking on mushrooms.

Shawnté Salabert

00:21:07.800 - 00:21:11.550

Who would want to? I don't even like hiking after having a beer.

Colin True

00:21:12.430 - 00:21:16.110

I know. Do you want to do oboe's too? Or do you want to do oboe's?

Shawnté Salabert

00:21:16.110 - 00:21:18.510

Oh, no, I'll do Oboz. All right.

Colin True

00:21:18.590 - 00:21:19.070

All right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:21:19.070 - 00:21:24.990

Well, this is exciting. You're giving me a lot of power today, Colin. Yeah. You know, is this my prize for winning?

Colin True

00:21:26.510 - 00:21:30.790

So, Shantae, your prize for winning is you get to do all the ad reads?

Shawnté Salabert

00:21:30.790 - 00:21:44.950

Oh, yeah, this is great because I'm going to really work on. I'm going to really work on work on my ad voice.

So today's episode of the Rock Fight is Presented by Oboz, who want to share their love of the hiking. Their love of the hiking. See, I'm already winning. This is.

Colin True

00:21:44.950 - 00:21:48.110

It's like. It's like the highways in LA. That's my 101.

Shawnté Salabert

00:21:48.110 - 00:21:56.150

My mom asked me when I was home. We were. We were driving somewhere. I'm like, oh, yeah, just get on the 43. And she's like, why did you put a the there? I was like, oh, wow.

Colin True

00:21:56.230 - 00:22:00.630

I saw an Instagram reel the other day explaining the history behind it. Do you know the history behind that?

Shawnté Salabert

00:22:00.780 - 00:22:01.260

I don't.

Colin True

00:22:01.740 - 00:22:51.860

Okay, so this is why. I'm gonna pause the music right here. This is why people and. And it's all over the West Coast. Even in. In Seattle, people say the.

The, I think, but it extends from. From la. So LA had one of some of the first cities to have interstates, actually have highways in the country prior to.

I think it was Eisenhower that did the whole interstate system across the country. And so. But all the interstates here had names. It was like the Ventura Freeway or, you know, the Santa Monica highway, whatever the name. Right. And so.

But then when they instituted the National Highway System, they gave them all numbers. So they had to convert the ones in LA to numbers. But until then it was, you get on the Ventura Parkway or whatever it was.

And so then it became, you get on, like, the. Whatever the number was. And that is why it was. Because that's how they referred to the names before there were numbers.

And then they added numbers and they kept saying the. The.

Shawnté Salabert

00:22:51.860 - 00:22:52.660

Oh, I love it.

Colin True

00:22:53.140 - 00:22:53.860

There you go.

Shawnté Salabert

00:22:54.330 - 00:22:55.450

Wonderful. Thank you, Colin.

Colin True

00:22:55.450 - 00:22:58.530

Right? I was so excited to learn that because I always thought it was weird. Like, why do we do that?

Shawnté Salabert

00:22:58.530 - 00:23:00.730

It is weird, but I just never questioned it, apparently.

Colin True

00:23:00.730 - 00:23:02.370

I know. Me either. It's like, oh, that's just what they do.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:02.370 - 00:23:24.420

Until my mother shamed me. All right, so anyway, the hiking. The hiking. Let's go back to the hiking.

So today's episode of the Rock Fight is presented by Oboz, who want to share their life of hiking. And we want to help them by uncovering all the different reasons we love to take the long walk. Including the five following.

Number one, to take moody photos in flannel.

Colin True

00:23:25.300 - 00:23:25.740

Yes.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:25.740 - 00:23:26.140

Yes.

Colin True

00:23:26.140 - 00:23:27.260

Got to put on your flannel.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:27.260 - 00:23:28.060

Whether or not it's.

Colin True

00:23:28.060 - 00:23:30.300

Get out there and look, look. You know, grizzled.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:30.300 - 00:23:31.340

Yeah. Emote.

Colin True

00:23:31.340 - 00:23:32.740

Set the mood. Yes.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:32.980 - 00:23:34.580

It's nature emo. It's great.

Colin True

00:23:35.220 - 00:23:36.660

Nature emo. That's good.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:36.900 - 00:23:41.140

Number two, because nobody clicks, like, on your couch. Selfies.

Colin True

00:23:41.540 - 00:23:43.060

Seriously, Right?

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:43.060 - 00:23:44.020

It depends on the couch?

Colin True

00:23:45.140 - 00:23:47.070

Sure. Depends on what else you're doing on the couch, I guess.

Shawnté Salabert

00:23:47.460 - 00:23:53.940

Brown chicken bran cow number three. You get to call sandwiches fuel.

Colin True

00:23:54.500 - 00:23:59.940

Yeah. That night when you lied about your dinner, you were fueling on PB and J's.

Shawnté Salabert

00:24:00.740 - 00:24:04.700

Thank you. That's right. If you could go back and tell my mom back in the day, maybe we could rewind.

Colin True

00:24:04.700 - 00:24:05.540

You unground her.

Shawnté Salabert

00:24:05.540 - 00:25:03.720

Unground me? Because that was devastating. All I could do was just sit on the floor in my room and listen to my Walkman. Boring.

And number four, hiking means the Bridger boot collection. The Bridger Ridge is here to help you smooth out the rough trails in front of you with enhanced stability and protection.

The Bridger Ridge is Oboz first boot with Gore Tex. So bring on the smiles and the miles in the Bridger Ridge.

And if you find yourself near Conway, Arkansas this summer, hop on into Wilkinson's Mall for the largest collection of boots in shoes in Arkansas. And you can get your own. Is that A.R. boo's and Shoes. And you can get your own pair of Oboe's Bridger ridges.

So to pull us out here, this hiking appreciation moment is brought to you by oboz of Bozeman, Montana, certified B Corp 6 million tree planter and inhabitant of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Oboes is the maker of premium quality footwear for the trail and the cupid to the outdoor world. Oboz Love hiking.

Colin True

00:25:04.430 - 00:25:05.550

Good job. Well done.

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:05.710 - 00:25:06.390

I did my best.

Colin True

00:25:06.390 - 00:25:07.550

Just crushing it on the admiring.

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:07.710 - 00:25:11.790

Do you know how hot it is in my house right now, by the way? I don't have ac, so I'm reading.

Colin True

00:25:11.790 - 00:25:12.270

Oh, no.

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:12.270 - 00:25:16.830

So I'm just. And I had to turn my ceiling fan off so that it wouldn't be going throughout the whole.

Colin True

00:25:16.830 - 00:25:18.190

Do you have a window AC in your bedroom?

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:18.190 - 00:25:22.630

At least I have a little baby window ac. It's just like I was living in New York again. It's a little.

Colin True

00:25:22.630 - 00:25:29.910

It was humid here over the weekend. Yeah. Not gonna complain about the weather on the podcast in Southern California, but it was. It was uncomfortable. Okay.

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:29.910 - 00:25:32.350

Yeah. My armpits, my arm. My knee pits are sweating.

Colin True

00:25:34.260 - 00:25:36.460

I hate it when that cool shower before bed.

Shawnté Salabert

00:25:36.460 - 00:25:37.060

I shall.

Colin True

00:25:37.860 - 00:26:10.590

Well, our last story today is presented by Lem's Footwear, who is looking for retailers to come say hi and see what LEMs can offer their shoe wall when they exhibit at Switchback next month.

And according to sgb, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has reported that a rise in joint and bone injuries correlates with the surging popularity of E bikes. Apparently, injuries are occurring across all age groups.

So not just the 82, you know, 12 to 14 year olds I see ripping around my neighborhood every day. According to Dr. Brian Waterman, a spokesperson for the AAOS. Just rolls.

Shawnté Salabert

00:26:12.830 - 00:26:18.590

If they don't say it like that, they should just fold now. Like close the whole organization down. Hey yos.

Colin True

00:26:18.750 - 00:26:37.320

Traditional biking helps build muscles, coordination and bone strength. E bikes, while convenient and appealing, reduce those benefits and raise the risk of serious orthopedic. Orthopedic injuries.

It's a trade off that many riders don't realize until it is too late. So fuck off E bikes. That's my part. I'm adding that Dr. Waterman didn't say that. Analog bikes win.

Shawnté Salabert

00:26:37.960 - 00:26:45.840

Wow. Haters going to hate. I mean, to be fair, I'm not a fan, but I'm also not a very good cyclist in general. So I don't know whether or not.

Colin True

00:26:45.840 - 00:27:08.810

No, I actually would like to get like a commuter e bike. I don't want them. What? I do not want an e mountain bike. I do not. I want to ride analog. I, yeah, I'm just not into it. I get it.

I've totally been won over to the idea behind it. Not for me. Now. Maybe there'll come a time. I'm turning 50 this year. We'll see. Maybe, maybe I'll be an E biker before too long. On mountain bike.

On my mountain bike. But not right now. So.

Shawnté Salabert

00:27:08.810 - 00:28:14.130

Wow. Yeah, I just, I, I feel like people can't even handle cars so E bikes that fastness on a bike doesn't inspire confidence.

But no, I know that they're, they're great for people who like, you know, Perhaps near future 50 year old you when all, suddenly all your joints just start turning into goo. I guess you know, you can go uphill in if it gives you a little assist.

But I think, I also think, and I also don't like the ones I've heard that are a little like whiny sounding. But I don't know, I mean, I'm curious.

This is really like the speed thing makes sense to me that people are going too fast in these things and they're just spinning outta control. Because as somebody who has spun out of control going too slow on a bike, I can see how it can happen.

That's like when I was in Moab riding mountain biking there for the first time. I did not know what to do when I was got to Iraq. So I just hit my brakes.

Which of course, as you know, is the complete opposite of what you should do when you get to Iraq. And I just went ass over tea kettle and like landed downhill. Where were my gloves? My gloves were in my pocket. Where were my hands full of blood?

Colin True

00:28:14.370 - 00:28:19.130

And as I say, you're not gonna. There's really nowhere to land in Moab where you're not going to lose skin.

Shawnté Salabert

00:28:19.130 - 00:28:44.029

No. And the great thing was I was spending the next few nights I was on assignment for Outside writing about arches.

And I was spending the next few nights sleeping in my car, which was actually my friend's car. And so sleeping, like sleeping as a woman who is not 20, but also not 50, I just want to put out there.

Um, sleeping in my car with like having just flown over my mountain bike onto the hard ground was. Got uncomfortable the second night.

Colin True

00:28:44.190 - 00:28:45.070

I'm sure it did.

Shawnté Salabert

00:28:45.070 - 00:28:59.190

So many bruises. I had such a bad road rash in my hands. Ah. But yeah, I don't know.

I know I cannot be trusted on an E bike, so I get the fast thing, but here's what I don't get. Like, so they're saying that, oh, you're not building your muscles enough riding these. Are they saying that people just aren't pedaling on an E bike?

Colin True

00:28:59.190 - 00:29:35.260

Like, I don't know. I mean, I, I guess. I mean, and listen, this is, you know, the E bike is a very deep issue. You're right.

There's the, there's the pedal assist, there's the bikes with throttles. I, I think there's a. We are going to probably come to some sort of breaking point with these things.

When you do see like literal 12 year olds in the middle of the road like that. I'm sitting behind in a car, you know, and it's like the people don't know the rules. They don't know what to do.

They're wearing regular bike helmets, which you're going way too fast for that to have any help help you if you do crash. Right. I mean, there's just so much, you know, that it's.

Shawnté Salabert

00:29:35.500 - 00:29:40.940

I mean, is it an education issue then? So is it not just like FD bikes? I think it's more of an education issue.

Colin True

00:29:41.580 - 00:30:12.840

Yeah. And it's not. I mean, I'm joking around. I think, you know, actually, I think E bikes, generally speaking, are actually awesome.

They're really incredible development that we have in the outdoor space and in life and in general.

But I mean, I think, you know, the one thing about this article is like, it seems like it's pretty black or white that more people are getting hurt because either it's education or they're not expecting what to do. Maybe they are going too fast. I don't know if cars are involved, but something.

There's gonna be something bad I feel like is gonna happen that's gonna force us to make some changes, you know, or I'm not sure what it'll be.

Shawnté Salabert

00:30:12.840 - 00:30:16.960

I don't know. But do we do that as a country? Bad things happen, right?

Colin True

00:30:16.960 - 00:30:19.600

That's why we all wear seatbelts. There was a time, right? Remember?

Shawnté Salabert

00:30:19.600 - 00:30:20.760

Oh, remember when.

Colin True

00:30:21.400 - 00:30:27.240

Yeah, I remember growing up not wearing seatbelts and then coming home from school one day and be like, we have to wear seat belts. They told us we have to wear seatbelts.

Shawnté Salabert

00:30:27.240 - 00:30:30.690

That's true. I forgot about that. That was in our youth. Youth.

Colin True

00:30:31.250 - 00:30:44.290

Yeah. The public service announcement has sort of gone the way of the dodo, I guess. But maybe it's time for it to come back.

When it comes to E bikes, that's rock fighting and the public service announcement. Keep your fucking kid home and get the kid an analog bike.

Shawnté Salabert

00:30:44.610 - 00:30:46.050

Teach him how to pedal a bike.

Colin True

00:30:46.129 - 00:30:59.290

But I tell you what, it's kind of like phones and wakes.

So I have two 14 year olds and they both want E bikes because their friends all have E bikes and like they will go out on their bikes, but they just kill themselves to keep up with their friends on E bikes.

Shawnté Salabert

00:30:59.290 - 00:31:05.450

I had no idea it was that ubiquitous with kids. I really thought it was like people our age that are like, I don't want to pedal uphill anymore.

Colin True

00:31:06.090 - 00:31:19.610

Oh no, there's so many kids that ride them now. I mean, it's truly like they are the only two in their friend group that does not have one. And so kind of like a phone too.

It's like if you're like, I don't want to get my kid a phone. It's like, well, good, then you're dooming them to a social less life.

Shawnté Salabert

00:31:19.690 - 00:31:26.010

Maybe you should show their hold a screening at your house where you just project this article onto your wall.

Colin True

00:31:26.810 - 00:31:29.930

It's like when they used to show you like blood on the highway in driver's ed or whatever.

Shawnté Salabert

00:31:30.250 - 00:31:33.590

Exactly. Scared straight E bikes, man.

Colin True

00:31:33.590 - 00:31:45.030

Well, anyway, pretty interesting though. I do think it's going to be continue to be a really interesting topic as this evolves because the obviously E bikes are not going away.

They continue to gain more and more users. So we'll see where this ends up.

Shawnté Salabert

00:31:45.350 - 00:31:45.750

All right.

Colin True

00:31:45.750 - 00:31:49.950

And we'll cover it here on the rock fight. Do you. Would you like to go three for three or do you want me to take the lemon?

Shawnté Salabert

00:31:49.950 - 00:32:19.390

I'm Ready? I'm ready. Let's go. All right.

At Lem's, we're all about creating footwear that fits the way your feet are naturally shaped, comfortable, functional, and ready for anything. One of our newest releases, the Trailblazer, is wider, roomier version of our popular Trailhead, and it's quickly become a top seller this spring.

We're stoked about the response and can't wait to show it off. Come check it out at the Switchback event in Nashville, June 17th to 18th, or snag a pair now at lemshoes.com.

Colin True

00:32:20.510 - 00:32:23.630

Is this where you're going to tell us how much you enjoy your Lem Switchbacks?

Shawnté Salabert

00:32:23.630 - 00:32:56.310

I love my switchbacks. I took them to Wisconsin with me. The Lem Switchback. I took it. I took both of them, not just one. I took both of the sandals to Wisconsin with me. And.

And my mom's immediate response to these sandals, which I personally don't think are attractive sandals, was, those are cute. So if Midwestern moms like them. Yeah. So I had to then defend my honor and say that, well, it's not about how they look, it's about how they feel.

And I feed mom. They were really comfortable. Okay. Even though she's telling me she likes how they look. It's like something inside of me snapped when she said that.

Colin True

00:32:56.310 - 00:32:58.590

It's to say instinct to disagree with your mom.

Shawnté Salabert

00:32:58.590 - 00:33:02.190

Yeah. 13 year old Shantae was like, well, if you like it, I don't like it.

Colin True

00:33:02.750 - 00:33:08.430

Those are the most wonderful things I ever seen. And here's a thousand dollars because I think so. No, no, don't you give me any money.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:10.190 - 00:33:12.750

That was me. Say I was tricking you. It was psyops.

Colin True

00:33:14.590 - 00:33:16.870

Just, you can't. You can't move on from it. It's the way it is.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:16.870 - 00:33:20.110

I know. Time at home, time at the family.

Rock Fight Radio!

00:33:20.910 - 00:33:23.070

It's time for a parting shot.

Colin True

00:33:24.750 - 00:33:33.630

All right, for today's parting shot, a new study has shown a correlation between hemorrhoids and using your smartphone on the toilet. All right.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:34.430 - 00:33:35.630

I'm trying not to laugh.

Colin True

00:33:35.630 - 00:33:47.790

Apparently, toilet sitting smartphone users experience a 46% increased risk for hemorrhoids. All right, And I'm talking to you, everybody listening to this, like, you know, I'm trying to like. It's like my own psa.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:47.790 - 00:33:49.160

Are we a medical podcast now?

Colin True

00:33:49.790 - 00:33:50.350

Right? We are.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:50.350 - 00:33:54.950

We talked about corns in this episode. We talk about, like, injuries when you're.

Colin True

00:33:54.950 - 00:33:56.070

Talking about corns on every episode.

Shawnté Salabert

00:33:56.070 - 00:33:56.750

I mean, we should.

Colin True

00:33:57.630 - 00:34:26.159

My parting shot isn't shock around the study. It Said that percentage isn't higher. 46%. Is it? I mean, that's it. I mean, who in 2025 sits on the toilet in the bathroom without your phone?

Sitting on the commode and checking out for like three to 20 minutes is like one of the most truly lovely moments of joy that we get to have to ourselves every day. And if that means we have to deal with itchy assholes as a result of that, fine. Right.

If I want time off of my screen, I will go outside for an adventure. I'll pull a salibar and poop alongside a trail.

Shawnté Salabert

00:34:26.959 - 00:34:28.799

Alongside the trail 200ft away.

Colin True

00:34:29.519 - 00:34:30.959

I'll poop 200ft away.

Shawnté Salabert

00:34:31.839 - 00:34:32.399

Thank you.

Colin True

00:34:33.199 - 00:34:41.919

At home, the toilet and the phone are a perfect pairing. All right. They really are. So I think, I guess my parting shot is it's worth the risk, you know?

Shawnté Salabert

00:34:42.079 - 00:34:57.300

I have a great poop. Why am I even saying this? I have a great poop story called Amazing. And I don't. First of all, I don't have hemorrhoids, but I do it.

I'll sometimes just read a whole chapter on the toilet to this day. And, like, the poop will have ended a long time prior, but I'm just there.

Colin True

00:34:57.300 - 00:34:57.660

Of course.

Shawnté Salabert

00:34:57.660 - 00:35:03.180

It's a nice. You're right. It is a quiet moment. When I used to work in an office, it was my me time. I would be like, yeah.

Colin True

00:35:03.180 - 00:35:05.580

You ever end up in the bathroom without your phone? It's like.

Shawnté Salabert

00:35:05.660 - 00:35:06.180

It's weird.

Colin True

00:35:06.180 - 00:35:06.780

What's happening?

Shawnté Salabert

00:35:06.780 - 00:35:30.650

It's weird. What? Me and my thoughts. What are we doing here? No, when I was a kid, I used to. That was also my me time. But we didn't have phones.

We had Nancy Drew books. So I would take my Nancy Drew book into the bathroom and I would read a chapter of it, much like I do now.

And my mom would usually at some point during the proceedings, be like, are you pooping? Yeah. And I'd try to sound all strange like, yeah, I'm pooping. And so one.

Colin True

00:35:30.650 - 00:35:31.730

You're fake straining.

Shawnté Salabert

00:35:31.890 - 00:35:37.970

Fake straining. So shit. Seems realistic. I was a good actress, except for that one time I lied about the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Colin True

00:35:38.050 - 00:35:38.690

Seriously.

Shawnté Salabert

00:35:38.930 - 00:36:25.450

So one time it was just me. I was babysitting my sister, and I went in to read a chapter and have a drop of deuce.

And I come out, my sister, who's about 10 years younger than me, is sitting in front of the TV like a small angel. Like, she's cross legged, like just an angelic vision. And I was like, okay, that's weird. But Whatever. I flip on the light.

We shared a bedroom at the time. I flick on the light, and she has. In the. However long I was in the bathroom, that chapter of Nancy Drew wreaked havoc upon our bedroom.

She took my Body Bell perfume and made a crop circle out of it. And then she put baby powder on top of the perfume circle.

And then her piece de la resistance was to take my little red nail polish and make one tick mark of red nail polish on every item in our bedroom room. Like, every drawer, the curtains.

Colin True

00:36:25.450 - 00:36:26.170

Wait, how old?

Shawnté Salabert

00:36:27.690 - 00:36:30.610

I mean, she was probably, like maybe four at this time.

Colin True

00:36:30.610 - 00:36:31.570

Oh, okay. Okay.

Shawnté Salabert

00:36:31.570 - 00:36:33.690

I mean, yeah, she was not. She was not 14.

Colin True

00:36:34.570 - 00:36:35.050

Yeah.

Shawnté Salabert

00:36:35.050 - 00:36:56.830

And I called my mom at work. I was like, mom, Mom. Adrian just decimated our bedroom with my makeup. And she's like, what? Just cleaned it up. I'm like, you don't understand.

So my mom was like, whatever, Clean it up. I called my cousin. I'm like, no, no, no. This is the day I die when my mom sees what happens. And so my cousin's like, it can't be that bad.

And she comes out. She's like, oh, my God. How did she do this? How long were you in the bathroom? I'm like, not very long.

Colin True

00:36:57.630 - 00:37:00.830

Noon, like 90 seconds. She's real fast.

Shawnté Salabert

00:37:01.470 - 00:37:06.110

She's just so fast. So after that, I had to stop taking my book into the bathroom.

Colin True

00:37:06.750 - 00:37:11.110

See, it's like, don't worry about hemorrhoids. Worry about your little sister wrecking your room. That's what'll happen.

Shawnté Salabert

00:37:11.110 - 00:37:18.650

Yeah. That is a danger zone. So just keep up on anybody who might be in your vicinity when you're taking a long, restful poop.

Colin True

00:37:19.200 - 00:37:20.680

That's all I got. Anything else you want to talk about?

Shawnté Salabert

00:37:20.680 - 00:37:22.640

Not at all. We've already talked about my favorite thing.

Colin True

00:37:23.920 - 00:37:28.080

We saved it for last. There's the other thing you won for winning the Outdoor Town draft.

Shawnté Salabert

00:37:28.160 - 00:37:30.560

I feel I'm on cloud nine right now. Colin Truly.

Colin True

00:37:31.600 - 00:37:43.880
