Colin True

00:00:00.240 - 00:00:50.006

Hey, everyone. Before we get started, I'm excited to present a new sponsor to the show. Oboz. No shit. Really? It's Oboz. Many of you already know Oboz.

They're that plucky little brand from Bozeman. That's their name, folks, by the way. Outdoor Boseman. That's how it works.

They stood up in 2007 in a crowded footwear space and said, there's room for me too. They're an upstart outlier with a weird name, roomy toe box and well built offerings for committed hikers.

A combination that has attracted a loyal following for going on 20 years.

I'm happy to have Oboz join the Rock Fight because they are committed to shining a light on the core activity central to many of our outdoor pursuits. Hiking. You know, that thing we all do but few talk about. Guys, we are unified by hiking and they love hiking.

And that's something I can get down with. Over the coming months, we'll be sharing news and products from our friends from Bozeman. So welcome to the Rock Fight, Oboz. And let's cue the intro.

Chris DeMakes

00:00:50.118 - 00:00:57.650

Rock Fight. Rock fight. Rock flight. Rock Fight. Rock Fight. Rock fight.

Colin True

00:00:58.410 - 00:01:14.322

Welcome to the Rock Byte, where we speak our truth, slay sacred cows, and sometimes agree to disagree. This is an outdoor podcast that aims for the head.

I'm Colin True, and joining me today, I'm pretty sure that after this past week, he's just a zombie now. It's Justin Hausman, folks.

Justin Housman

00:01:14.466 - 00:01:19.150

Get your flu shot. Get it? Even if you've already had your flu shot, go out, get another one.

Colin True

00:01:19.530 - 00:01:21.394

You're starting off with your parting shot.

Justin Housman

00:01:21.442 - 00:01:34.644

This is the first year in like 10 years I haven't gotten the flu shot. And it's the first year in about 10 years I got the flu and I forgot how bad it is. Jesus Christ. I've been basically sleeping for four days straight.

I've watched Ghostbusters.

Colin True

00:01:34.692 - 00:01:39.300

Yep, you're getting this episode late this week because, Justin, you couldn't talk yesterday.

Justin Housman

00:01:39.460 - 00:01:53.028

Even just sitting up was asking too much. I will say, I think of all the things I've watched, I was surprised by Ghostbusters, Frozen Empire as being relatively enjoyable.

Now, granted, this is all having a fever, but I actually was surprised how much I liked that movie.

Colin True

00:01:53.124 - 00:01:56.906

So I might actually watch it now because I just assumed I would never see that movie.

Justin Housman

00:01:56.938 - 00:02:10.890

Yeah, me too. I didn't see the one the first. I didn't realize there were two Paul Rudd Ghostbusters movies until this week.

And I haven't seen the first one, Ghostbusters Afterlife. But I actually was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. And like Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray and they do, they do great. So is Winston. I forget his.

I forget the actor's name.

Colin True

00:02:11.010 - 00:02:12.586

Winston's Ernie Hudson.

Justin Housman

00:02:12.618 - 00:02:32.294

Yeah, thank you. Ernie Hudson. They all do great. And it's actually really enjoyable. So that was that, you know, it was 4am when I watched it.

But that I, I liked that and I enjoyed Please don't destroy that new comedy troupe that does their movie with Conan O'Brien. It was, it was pretty fun. I like that too. Something about the treasure of like Foggy Mountain. That was, that was pretty fun.

Colin True

00:02:32.462 - 00:02:46.470

My. For one of my 14 year olds. She is really into movies. She likes a lot of old movies. We really kind of bond on movies together.

But she's also at that age where everything's good. Oh, dad. Ghostbusters, Frozen, Empire. It was the best movie. And I'm like, there's no way that was the best movie.

Justin Housman

00:02:46.550 - 00:03:09.746

No, it was, it was. It was actually pretty fun. It was pretty fun. Paul Rudd. Paul Rudd is getting kind of. He's cash sacred to me. Like, he's just like. I kind of.

I'm kind of over Paul Rudd, but he's very Paul Rudd. But he's not even. He's not. He's in it a lot, but he's not even really. I wouldn't even say he's like the driving like star of the, of the movie. The.

The kid from Stranger Things is in is. Does it kind of carries it. I forget his name.

Colin True

00:03:09.898 - 00:03:16.658

But they, they just basically say, hey rud, here's like 10 to 20 million bucks. Like turn up. The Rudness basically is probably what happens, right?

Justin Housman

00:03:16.714 - 00:03:16.994

Yeah.

Colin True

00:03:17.042 - 00:03:17.950

He's like, all right.

Justin Housman

00:03:18.090 - 00:03:38.486

I thought it was. It would be kind of fun if they made another one.

And it was super self referential and like it turns out that Paul Rudd doesn't age because he's actually a ghost. That. I was thinking of that as I was watching it. Granted, it's pretty good. Pretty high fever at the time.

But I was like, it is wild that he's like 55 years old and he looks the same as he did 20 years ago. And it's like, that would be pretty funny if there's like, wait a minute.

Colin True

00:03:38.558 - 00:03:43.270

Well, in order for you to see that sequel, you'll have to get the flu again. So hopefully you never get to see that sequel.

Justin Housman

00:03:43.350 - 00:03:48.580

Who doesn't look the same is Bill Murray. Boy, he looks like an elderly gentleman at this point.

Colin True

00:03:49.040 - 00:04:28.520

He's an old guy. I saw him on SNL50. But anyway, Justin's back in the saddle. He's a little weaker than usual, but. But he's still going to bring it today.

And today we are going to talk about some interesting items have come out of the outdoor adventure community over the past few days and weeks.

But before we get to any of that, if you missed Monday's episode of the Rock Fight, go back to hear if we think that outdoor outdoor retailer Sierra, maybe they're poised to take down rei. Maybe go listen to the episode to find out what we think about that.

And be sure to come back this Friday to hear my conversation with Matt Dwyer from Patagonia, who's here to return fire at my assertion that Patagonia is not leading when it comes to Pfest. Do you want me to do your part? You want to give you a break this week? Give you a little less to say.

Justin Housman

00:04:28.560 - 00:04:30.520

Buddy, I got this. I got this.

Colin True

00:04:30.560 - 00:04:31.608

You got it. Okay. All right.

Justin Housman

00:04:31.664 - 00:05:33.418

Because it means that much to me that people subscribe to the Rock Fight newsletter because, I don't know, talking is easy because we talk anyway, but we actually have to sit down and write stuff for the newsletter. There's a lot of work that goes into. But no, it's great.

We this the one that just that came out this week features Wes Allen opining about some more retail goodness. And if you are any way involved in the retail industry, the outdoor retail industry, you're going to love everything that Wes writes.

I mean, if you're everything from working on the floor to owning a shop, man, the guy's smart. And so. And you're only going to get that with us. He's not writing that for anybody else. So just go to our website.

You get the little banner pop up that asks you to subscribe to the newsletter. Do that. Give us your email address. We're not going to share it. We're not going to do anything weird with it.

We're just going to send you some real delicious, exclusive content once a week. Also, we're going to ask you to do that thing where you subscribe and like us on whatever podcast app you're listening to us on. I go Apple Podcasts.

Colin, what's your go to?

Colin True

00:05:33.474 - 00:05:40.168

I actually I do go Spotify for my pods mostly. So there's separation between I do Apple music for music and I do pods on Spotify.

Justin Housman

00:05:40.354 - 00:05:50.076

That's. Wait, wait, wait. Because Apple Podcast is free, I guess.

Okay, for a split second, I thought maybe we were paying for like Apple music and Spotify at the same time, which would be totally bizarre.

Colin True

00:05:50.108 - 00:05:52.924

No, no, no, I'm not paying for Spotify. I do free Spotify for podcasts.

Justin Housman

00:05:52.972 - 00:06:02.600

Okay, excellent. Anyway, that's the whole point. However you listen to us, subscribe, follow and that all important five star rating. Pretty please.

Colin True

00:06:03.060 - 00:06:58.436

So our top story today is presented by your hub for ultralight gear Garage grown gear. Head to garagegrowngear.com and check them out. And we're check in on I think we're call ourselves for these stories. Rock Fight Resistance Radio.

Right? I love it. You like that.

So this past weekend, from Acadia in Maine to Joshua Tree in Southern California, protests were held at our national parks to speak out against actions taken by the Trump administration and commented on frequently here on the Rock fight. Most specifically the mass layoffs of national park staff.

I mean Justin, when you saw that just before I actually before I ask you that, I didn't know that was going on. I literally didn't know these protests were going on. I would have gone up the Joshua Tree and joined in.

I think it was Steven Casimiro who posted about it. I'm like awesome.

And then started to see all the news about all the other places that this was going on, which actually I thought it was cool that I didn't really know this was going on and that it's like boom, it hit and protests everywhere. I'm like this is great. So I was encouraged. I mean were you encouraged seeing this go down this past weekend?

Justin Housman

00:06:58.548 - 00:07:11.300

I guess I'm encouraged because it's cool to see that people care and that people will rally for this sort of thing. I'm not encouraged by what's going on.

I mean also just yesterday they announced closures of like, I don't like 20 different national park unit facilities. I don't know if you saw about, if you saw that.

Colin True

00:07:11.340 - 00:07:13.588

I did not see this one. Are we breaking news here? What happened?

Justin Housman

00:07:13.684 - 00:07:37.568

Not really huge, but like from basically across everywhere from Alaska to like Florida, they announced that they want to close like 20 different. It's not necessarily park units, it's like a facility center here or something here.

But they're like, you know, important because it's like something is served from that building. You know, I think one of them is like the only national park unit in Mississippi is getting closed.

Colin True

00:07:37.664 - 00:07:41.744

Poor Mississippi. Is there any more beaten down state Mississippi?

Justin Housman

00:07:41.792 - 00:08:33.704

I mean it's hard to be encouraged by that, to be encouraged by anything going on with national parks. But it is great to see that people care. I mean, I Just don't know what's going to happen.

There was a really interesting piece in the Guardian earlier this week that. Well, I don't want to get too deep into the weeds of politics. I'll just mention this.

That makes it seem as though it doesn't really matter what people do, because the GOP at an individual level, the congresspeople are terrified for their lives if they vote against anything that the administration wants to do because the followers will come after them. And so it's like, well, great, you can have all the protests on earth, but that might not move the needle.

So I don't know, it'll be interesting to, I mean, obviously be interesting to see what's going on, encouraged by the fact that people are going to stand up and fight for these places. And it just show, you know, it's.

It the what the real, the real discouraging part is it's like we're gonna have so much work to do once this, like, once we finally like rid ourselves of the scourge, you know, I.

Colin True

00:08:33.712 - 00:09:09.012

Think we gotta go through it though. I think. I think we had a. We almost had like a stay of execution with, with the break in Trump presidencies.

And even if he had lost this time, that was. We are gonna have to go through this at some point.

I think there' people out there who think that he was truly going to come in and like make things better and they need to feel the pain of what they're going to. What they're. What we are all going to endure. And this is beyond the national parks, right?

This is everything else that's going to happen and that's how it gets. That's how we put it in the past. I almost feel like we have to kind of. Kind of.

It's like Andy Defrain climbing through 500 yards of smell and found us only to come out clean on the other side. I think we need to have our Andy Defrain moment here.

Justin Housman

00:09:09.036 - 00:09:16.258

Yeah, maybe. I. But it also, you know, there's a very good chance that it'll be impossible to claw back some of these losses. You know, I don't know. We'll find out.

Colin True

00:09:16.314 - 00:09:18.514

It probably is. There will be some. We'll find out on the way, but.

Justin Housman

00:09:18.522 - 00:09:42.072

It also could mean that we emerge more protective of the places that we have. I don't know. I really. I truthfully don't know, but definitely stoked to see people doing it. I almost bought the mountain. The Mountain Gazette is. Is.

Is very at rogue, man. Very smartly cashing in on. I Don't know if you've seen, but they're, you know, they're selling shirts now with the.

An image of the upside down flag on El Capita. Pretty smart. I wish I would have thought of that for us, to be honest.

Colin True

00:09:42.216 - 00:09:51.368

Well, we actually had a listener reach out that he's making stickers that say it's an illustration. Of course, the flag on ocap, it says, keep your tiny hands off of our public land.

Justin Housman

00:09:51.424 - 00:10:01.000

That's great. See, that's wonderful. Yeah, I actually like that better.

I would have bought one if it didn't have the Mountain Gazette logo on it and it's pretty expensive. But I mean, that stuff all makes me happy, you know.

Colin True

00:10:01.120 - 00:10:01.816

Yeah, right.

Justin Housman

00:10:01.888 - 00:10:09.580

And so, you know, I don't know. I have faith in human beings, you know, like, I'm optimistic about that. I'm encouraged about how people are reacting, for sure.

Colin True

00:10:10.040 - 00:10:56.124

Well, another bit of encouraging and interesting conservation news.

According to gearjunkie.com this past week, the Red River Gorgeous Climbing Coalition, which is a non profit dedicated to protecting climbing access in the famous Kentucky climbing area. They acquired 700 acres and 14 miles of cliffline for $1.7 million.

When the land became available, the coalition was eager to pursue buying it, but the price tag made it seem out of reach. But through partnerships and loans, along with the public support to help repay those loans, they were able to get it done.

And now this area will feature an entirely new climbing area. They're going to expand climbing in this area.

Now, I know it's not a one for one because this wasn't a piece of public lands, but is this maybe, is this a bit of a roadmap to combat the selling off of our public lands? It's like, hey, all right, everybody looks like, okay, we'll buy it. Yeah, we'll compete with the oil companies.

Justin Housman

00:10:56.212 - 00:11:32.260

It's interesting.

I mean, this is kind of a fever dream for like old school conservatism, right, where you're just like the, you know, the government doesn't have anything to say over this sort of thing. Like people come to, together to put their own money in and buy stuff that matters to them.

I mean, like in some ways, in some, like weird, like purely on paper, where you just sort of eliminate human greed and like instinct, all these sorts of things, which is as far as I'm concerned, how conservatives like to live, you know, where you just, you just like you.

I could see the argument for this, right, that, that this is, this kind of, in some ways makes more sense because now not everybody is paying for A place that they may not.

Colin True

00:11:32.720 - 00:11:40.180

The problem is it's not going to be fair. Right. It's going to be like, we're going to put this up for sale, and then you're going to say, I'm going to buy it. Like, no, it's all right.

We're going to have these oil companies buy it.

Justin Housman

00:11:40.220 - 00:12:44.002

Well, that's what's going to happen eventually. Right? So, like, clearly this land wasn't valuable for anything other than climbing. So, like, that the problem is going to.

As soon as, like, for some reason something is more valuable than for something else, there's some sort of resource that can be extracted from it, you know, big pocket people will come in and buy and leave us with nothing. So that. I mean, there's the problem. But I think this kind of thing is really interesting. I think it's certainly an option for.

I mean, I don't know, like, what would be kind of neat is if, like, I don't. I don't even. I can't even think of a good example. But, like, if there were.

I don't know, if there were, like, areas of public lands that would be really good for one particular purpose, like mountain biking, for example, where you can't mountain bike now. And, like, mountain bike groups got together and, like, bought it and, like, built trails on it, that kind of.

And they didn't have to worry as much about, like, federally, like, you know, getting all through all the red tape of, like, federal bureaucracy in terms of environmental reviews and all that sort of stuff. Right.

But these are people that really care about the land and care about that area and, like, somehow know that building trails on isn't going to harm anything. Like, that's. That. I don't hate that. Like, that seems. That makes a lot of sense to me, you know?

Colin True

00:12:44.186 - 00:13:02.610

Yeah.

So I think the problem is when you go down that road, like, what if, like, your favorite spot up in the Sierra, that's on BLM land where you camp a lot, like, became available and, like, sweet, I'm gonna buy it. And then you can just be like, fuck everybody. Stay off of my land. You shut it down and no one else gets to use it again. Right.

But I do like the idea that, like, hey, the rock fight could buy a big parcel of land, like, out in, like, the desert or something like that.

Justin Housman

00:13:02.650 - 00:13:19.266

Yeah, I mean, it's. It's. It's. It's an interesting solution, potentially, depending on how it works, you know, like, are they going to charge you to come on to it?

I don't know. Are there, are they liable for people falling, hurting themselves?

I don't know how that's any of that would work, but I'm willing to have an open mind about that kind of thing. Absolutely.

Colin True

00:13:19.458 - 00:13:27.458

If you're a climber though, in Kentucky, how stoked are you right now? Like you're. The local climber coalition bought 14 miles of cliffline, so they're just going to develop it for more climbing.

Justin Housman

00:13:27.554 - 00:13:32.856

Did you. I haven't looked into this. Like was it used for climbing before? Like what was it, what was the land used for?

Colin True

00:13:33.008 - 00:14:04.316

I mean this, the Red River's gorge is a famous climbing area. So like it's, it's a. Either adjacent or part of that. I think it's just a section of it. I must. Maybe I.

And I don't know if there was relationships with private ownership so people could climb on it. What, what the story was.

There just, it's been a few years that this area came available and I think they immediately saw it like as an opportunity and it just, you know, obviously took time to kind of figure it out. So.

And I imagine to your point, there was not like a larger use for it, otherwise someone probably would have gobbled it up much more quickly because, you know, 700 acres for 1.7 million bucks. I'm sure to some people that doesn't seem like a lot of money for that amount, amount of land.

Justin Housman

00:14:04.388 - 00:14:08.440

So especially, I mean Kentucky has a lot of beautiful areas.

Colin True

00:14:08.820 - 00:14:14.636

Yeah, totally. But if you're like a non profit climbing organization, that's a lot of money. Right? So how do you figure it out? I'm just glad they did.

Such a cool story.

Justin Housman

00:14:14.708 - 00:15:18.714

Well, we have a couple little.

I mean this is probably pretty common in areas that are adjacent to rural zones, but we have a couple little, little just like small acreages kind of like abutting our town where I live that are like up for sale and they kind of have been for like a really long time. And the owner doesn't live around here and people use it like, and the owners like just don't do anything stupid basically. So like people use it.

There's mountain bike trails on it, there's hiking trails on it. People go up there and like this. The town has tried to put money together to buy some of these before. I don't know why necessarily.

Like, I'm not sure what they would do with it other than maybe making it a public park. But at that point then now all of a sudden you're like, well, you're probably not gonna be able to bikes on it anymore.

And like all these, all these more formal rules start to come into place and it's like, well, that's kind of nice just how it is.

Like, you know, so I mean, as much as I'm, you know, very much, you know, staunch, like old fashioned liberal Democrat, like, I, there's times where like not having, you know, state ownership of things kind of works out really nicely. So I, I don't know, you could.

Colin True

00:15:18.722 - 00:15:25.958

Buy it and then what is it? Justin Khan or Kona Khan? What was it we said last year, the, the, the alternative of the sea otter that you were going to do you remember?

Justin Housman

00:15:26.014 - 00:15:28.406

Oh my God, I do remember that. No, I don't remember what it was called.

Colin True

00:15:28.478 - 00:15:34.278

That's where you can hold it, be great houseman, kind get up here and go mountain biking on, on Justin's private land.

Justin Housman

00:15:34.334 - 00:15:54.906

I'm not an idiot though. I realize.

I realize, of course the problem with this sort of thing is that like, if you just open the floodgates to anybody doing whatever they want, all of a sudden things get destroyed real, real fast and there's no common, like, you know, management strategy for particular areas and it fucks everything up. I, believe me, I realize this, but it's sort of your fever dream. Oh, it'd be nice if I could ride bikes over there.

This sort of thing does make sense.

Colin True

00:15:55.098 - 00:16:11.498

Yeah. On face value, privatization makes a ton of sense. It's like, hey, turn it up. Have somebody privately run it.

They'll be invested in maintaining it and making money from it and they'll do all the right things because of that. Just then when you start peeling back that onion, you realize like, oh, actually a lot of bad shit can happen here, so maybe not so good.

Justin Housman

00:16:11.554 - 00:16:24.260

Yeah, yeah, well, we're good. You know, we're only, let's see, modern humans evolved about 150,000 years ago, roughly speaking. I mean, we still don't know how to share.

We're still, we still just don't.

Colin True

00:16:24.340 - 00:16:26.196

As evidenced by the two toddlers in your house.

Justin Housman

00:16:26.268 - 00:16:44.676

Totally. You know, it's like, like, I'd love to. Gotta be nice. If you could somehow. I don't know how this would work, but if you could somehow.

Well, I guess if you were a God, you could sort of could just sit back and like watch like, humans evolve. Like, are we better now than we used to be? I doubt it, frankly.

I think human nature is probably human nature and people still suck just as much as they always have.

Colin True

00:16:44.828 - 00:16:49.402

But I'm sure we've evolved to a certain degree and learn and behaviors have changed.

Justin Housman

00:16:49.466 - 00:17:04.950

I think if you're comfortable, maybe, but not if you're uncomfortable. Right. Then it just becomes every man for himself. I gotta. I gotta feed my. Myself and my family or whatever. But it would. It's just.

It's just like we just can't. We just still can't. And I don't know they'll ever be able to. It's really.

Colin True

00:17:05.730 - 00:17:07.850

Maybe. Guess what? We won't be here to find out.

Justin Housman

00:17:07.890 - 00:17:09.098

We are not gonna be here to find out.

Colin True

00:17:09.154 - 00:17:10.234

Good luck, future humans.

Justin Housman

00:17:10.282 - 00:17:10.602

Yeah.

Colin True

00:17:10.666 - 00:17:20.976

Yeah, actually, we're not gonna. Justin and I are applying for a spot on the International Space Station to get the hell off this planet. I think we could podcast up there.

We'll just be able up in space, zipping around, doing podcasts.

Justin Housman

00:17:21.088 - 00:17:27.376

My fear would be we'd have a lot less to talk about because, you know, we wouldn't see much or do much. We'd run out of things like, hey.

Colin True

00:17:27.488 - 00:17:28.832

Like, you know, looked out the window.

Justin Housman

00:17:28.896 - 00:17:45.216

Yeah, here's what anti gravity does to the treadmill. This, that, or the other substance. And once we kind of ran through all those substances, we could. We could test.

I don't know what else we'd talk about. I mean, we'd probably get really good at like. Like peeing at stuff, right? Like, because you're like.

Because, I mean, I'd be so curious how that worked. Like, if you just like, let her. Let her fly like an orbit.

Colin True

00:17:45.248 - 00:17:46.016

Let her rip or whatever.

Justin Housman

00:17:46.048 - 00:17:46.416

Like what?

Colin True

00:17:46.488 - 00:17:48.128

Yell like, dude, I ran into your piss again.

Justin Housman

00:17:48.184 - 00:17:50.236

Does it. It like corkscrew? Like what?

Colin True

00:17:50.308 - 00:17:51.612

I think it just goes everywhere.

Justin Housman

00:17:51.676 - 00:17:52.012

Yeah.

Colin True

00:17:52.076 - 00:17:56.140

Yeah. All right, well, that segment. Sorry about that garage drone gear was brought to you.

Justin Housman

00:17:56.180 - 00:17:56.348

Sorry.

Colin True

00:17:56.364 - 00:17:59.900

That sorry gear. Who has all wonder these things too.

Justin Housman

00:17:59.940 - 00:18:01.692

Lloyd's probably been thinking about this sort of stuff.

Colin True

00:18:01.756 - 00:18:32.190

I. You know what?

Justin Housman

00:18:32.230 - 00:18:33.982

Is it. Can I guess?

Colin True

00:18:34.126 - 00:18:34.446

Yeah.

Justin Housman

00:18:34.478 - 00:18:40.542

Is it Norda? It is, yes. Good for them. Good. I talked to Lloyd a little bit about that. I wasn't sure if it was going to happen.

Colin True

00:18:40.726 - 00:18:43.726

I have my first pair of. I have my Norda's coming on the way too. I'm getting a pair of nordis.

Justin Housman

00:18:43.758 - 00:18:44.782

Oh, nice. Which ones do you know?

Colin True

00:18:44.806 - 00:18:46.922

Yeah.002s.

Justin Housman

00:18:47.026 - 00:18:49.290

Okay. I have the ones and the twos, I think.

Colin True

00:18:49.410 - 00:18:51.482

Okay. The twos are a little lower profile. Midsole.

Justin Housman

00:18:51.546 - 00:18:52.186

Yep. That's right. Yep.

Colin True

00:18:52.218 - 00:18:52.746

Compared to the ones.

Justin Housman

00:18:52.778 - 00:19:00.470

Yeah, yeah. God. And you forgive me? You haven't tried them ever, right? No. Oh, I can't wait to hear. I hope you hate them because they'll be fun to talk about.

Colin True

00:19:01.010 - 00:19:01.722

It's a good point.

Justin Housman

00:19:01.746 - 00:19:01.946

Yeah.

Colin True

00:19:01.978 - 00:19:05.594

All right. We'll only talk about the podcast. We promise we'll only talk about the podcast if I hate them.

Justin Housman

00:19:05.602 - 00:19:09.674

Well, because, I mean, I love them so much. And, you know, if you just saw. These are also great. That's not very interesting.

Colin True

00:19:09.722 - 00:19:10.650

But that's not like.

Justin Housman

00:19:10.690 - 00:19:10.954

Yeah.

Colin True

00:19:11.002 - 00:19:11.946

Love fest. Norda.

Justin Housman

00:19:11.978 - 00:19:12.186

Yeah.

Colin True

00:19:12.218 - 00:19:30.642

Advertise. You're listening to Rock fight Radio. Oh, you got DJCT back with you spinning the hits.

And it's that time because we have another new song from that hit machine, Fitz. And Fitz wants to ask you why just settle for a smart sock when you can opt for a smarter sock?

Colin True

00:20:40.118 - 00:21:17.540

Fits and now back to the show. All right, we got a new segment today presented by our friends at Oboz who want to know, how do you love hiking? And we're going to count the ways.

We love hiking in a minute. But we're. Right now we're getting quite a bit of email from our listeners, which is awesome.

But in order to make the email we get more fun to read on the podcast. We're going to start asking our listeners questions. All right, so this is Q and A Corner.

We're going to talk about a topic, and then, listeners, you send us your responses to the questions we ask. Be sure to include your address, because if we read your response on a future episode of the Rock Fight, we'll send you Rock Fight stickers. Maybe.

Maybe make you a personalized Rock Fight action figure. I don't want to speak for producer Dave or Simon on that one, but.

Justin Housman

00:21:17.580 - 00:21:19.492

Get on it, Dave. Do it for the people.

Colin True

00:21:19.676 - 00:21:24.388

Because all of a sudden it's like, hey, Dave, you got those, like, 20 action figures we didn't tell you that you had to make.

Justin Housman

00:21:24.444 - 00:21:25.440

He loves it.

Colin True

00:21:26.620 - 00:21:27.860

Did you see this week's?

Justin Housman

00:21:27.940 - 00:21:30.886

No. Oh, the Pistol Ranger. Yeah, it's great.

Colin True

00:21:31.028 - 00:21:46.786

That was a good one. All right, so this week's question for Q and A Corner. And I've really been thinking about this a lot lately. Does anyone.

I think you and I have touched on this before, but even if so, I have some new thoughts. Does anyone actually care about sponsored athletes anymore? What do you think?

Justin Housman

00:21:46.938 - 00:21:47.490

What do you think?

Colin True

00:21:47.530 - 00:21:48.178

Does anyone care?

Justin Housman

00:21:48.234 - 00:21:51.762

What do you think, Colin? THE. I know what I think. What do you think?

Colin True

00:21:51.786 - 00:21:53.074

I know you don't know, but I.

Justin Housman

00:21:53.082 - 00:21:57.150

Mean, what do you think the listeners are gonna say? Like, what do you think that. What do you think the dominant response will be?

Colin True

00:21:57.450 - 00:22:35.072

I mean, I think it'll probably be split. I think there's going to be people who really get into it, because I think.

So I was having an exchange with one of the hosts over on the out of Collective podcast.

We were kind of joking back and forth on Instagram, and he was bringing up the point that he thinks that the ski athletes should have guaranteed contracts that, like, no matter what they place or how they do get the podium or not, they should be guaranteed money. And my contention is, like, outdoor athletes are an expense, right? They're not earning money for a brand.

So if the brand all of a sudden gets in tough times, it's like, yeah, we don't have money to pay you, so how can you have a guaranteed contract? This isn't like, like Josh Allen, who sold like, a thousand jerseys in a weekend, right?

And, like, there's money being brought in by their presence on the team.

Justin Housman

00:22:35.256 - 00:22:39.280

So then I think we need to reframe the. I think we need to restructure the question a little bit.

Colin True

00:22:39.400 - 00:22:40.180

Okay?

Justin Housman

00:22:40.760 - 00:23:19.558

Does anyone. I would say it's more like, does anyone actually care about the brand because they sponsor an athlete that you like.

Isn't that what you're really getting after? Because it's like, it is because. Because what?

The way that if you just say, care about sponsored athletes, that makes me think about, yeah, do I care about like famous or not famous necessarily, but you know, really talented people doing things that are really amazing and watching them do it. Yes, I do care. And they happen to be sponsored. I think people might get confused and be like, well, yeah, I love watching so and so ski. Right.

But like, do you care about Atomic Skis because so and so rides for them. That's the. Isn't that kind of what we're more getting at here?

Colin True

00:23:19.614 - 00:23:30.002

Kind of.

I mean, I think the thing that's changed is like, back in the day, like, even if, like you didn't whitewater kayak in the 90s, you still knew who Eric Jackson was or like, you knew who like Ned Overend was even if you weren't.

Justin Housman

00:23:30.066 - 00:23:32.306

And that's cool. There's nothing wrong. That's great. Yeah.

Colin True

00:23:32.418 - 00:23:56.452

But now I, I feel like it's getting more niche, right? Because like last week Mountain Hardware announced. What's her name? Liz Durstein. I don't know who Liz Durste is.

She's a new long distance hiker and trail runner who's joining the Mountain Hardware athlete team. Okay, but it's like, what does that really, no offense to Liz, I'm sure she's a wonderful athlete, but what does it do for the brand?

Who's going, ah, Hardware, they got Liz and now I'm gonna go shop.

Justin Housman

00:23:56.596 - 00:24:07.828

That's. But that's what I'm saying. Like, like, does it, does it, does brand's roster influence whether or not you like the brand more?

I mean, because that's the only reason they sponsor these.

Colin True

00:24:07.884 - 00:24:08.772

That's kind of what we're doing, right?

Justin Housman

00:24:08.796 - 00:24:11.972

Yeah, that's. I want to make sure that's what we're asking. Not like, I mean, does it work.

Colin True

00:24:11.996 - 00:24:25.344

For you on the surf side? Are there any brands, and I know this is a hard question for you because you and I are kind of aligned on this.

Like, I'm gonna buy what I want to buy regardless of who's on the athlete roster. But do you feel like there is a, an effect on a surf brand that is truly felt by the presence of their athlete?

Justin Housman

00:24:25.472 - 00:24:45.648

The only time I would say that, I think for younger surfers, probably it. I can tell you right now that it never really did for me.

But I also came of age in the 90s, in in the surf world, when it was extremely cool, like, Volcom was by far the coolest brand because they were anti, Anti establishment. So, like, you wouldn't be caught dead with like a quicksilver or like a rip curl shirt on.

Colin True

00:24:45.784 - 00:24:46.224

Right.

Justin Housman

00:24:46.312 - 00:25:14.210

And so, like, I was kind. I kind. I cut my teeth in an anti surf industry world. I loved, like, my favorite surfers.

Like, everybody hated Kelly slater in the 90s, for example, because he was this, like, rock. Not even a rock star. He was like a jock for, like, Quicksilver. So everyone. He's boring. I don't like him anyway.

And so I come from that place, naturally speaking. So I, I would say that in this, as far as the surf world goes.

No, but, but except when it's like, if you're like an aging surfer and there's someone that surfs well that you like and they ride a certain brand of board.

Colin True

00:25:14.510 - 00:25:15.622

Yeah, yeah.

Justin Housman

00:25:15.686 - 00:25:20.326

That, that will, that will turn my head because I'll be like, oh, this person's making. This brand is making boards for, like, bigger.

Colin True

00:25:20.358 - 00:25:20.678

Interesting.

Justin Housman

00:25:20.694 - 00:25:30.114

Okay, bigger, Older surfer a certain way. And that's how I want to surf. But that's a little different than. Well, I don't know. That might be.

That's probably the same thing for snowboarders or skiers or for cycles.

Colin True

00:25:30.162 - 00:25:52.650

I mean, like, again, not to pick on Liz. I don't know Liz. I mean, she could be. I'm sure she's amazing, but it's also like, you know, she's a.

She's a hiker and a runner and we're talking about just like outdoor apparel. So I mean, like, I, I get the board. Maybe a gear thing is a little bit of a different conversation. Right.

Because it's like, if you recognize, oh, that person might surf more like I do. I. And I, I can make that correlation. I might be more interested in their products. But even then, it still feels kind of like a stretch to me.

Justin Housman

00:25:52.690 - 00:27:09.218

Right. No, I see. Also we're.

We're a little bit, like, it's hard for us because we also know, I mean, anybody listening to the rock fight knows, but like, we know that if, like all of a sudden Shantae Salibair is sponsored by Altra, where it's like, well, yeah, she wants to get paid, you know, that doesn't necessarily mean she thinks Altra is the best shoes in the world, you know? And, like, I realize that, like, regular consumers who aren't in the outdoor industry know that too.

But, like, I think there's certainly a point at which if you've heard of a person and you see them rocking a brand's gear, you assume that gear is authentic or good enough to get you to do whatever they're doing. Obviously, that's the whole point of doing any of this.

But, I mean, I'd like to get back to my own question, which I asked you, which is what do you think readers would think? I have to assume that most people will say they don't really give a shit.

I find it hard to believe that people really care that much about sponsored outdoor athletes.

I think, yeah, I mean, they might in the ski world and the snowboard world if you're a younger participant, because you'll have heroes and idols that you look up to and you might buy their shit because you think that. And I don't do those things. I have no idea who's cool now, but, you know, because so and so is your favorite.

You're going to wear their hoodies or whatever. But, like, I find it pretty hard to believe, especially in, like, the hiking and like, trail running segments.

You're so, like, you're probably so particular about what you like, don't like. Like, why would you, why would you change that based on a sponsored athlete?

Colin True

00:27:09.314 - 00:27:21.030

Well, let's talk about one. There's an Michaela. Michaela Schiffrin is, I guess objectively now the most accomplished US skier of all time. Yeah. Right. She won her 100th race.

She's incredible.

Justin Housman

00:27:21.110 - 00:27:21.350

Right.

Colin True

00:27:21.390 - 00:27:23.142

All she does is go out and beat everybody.

Justin Housman

00:27:23.206 - 00:27:23.478

Sure.

Colin True

00:27:23.534 - 00:27:26.454

And she's sponsored by Barillo. Right. The. The pasta brand.

Justin Housman

00:27:26.622 - 00:27:27.350

I don't eat.

Colin True

00:27:27.430 - 00:27:27.926

It's kind of weird.

Justin Housman

00:27:27.958 - 00:27:30.038

That's not very good. It's not even, it's like a low shelf.

Colin True

00:27:30.134 - 00:27:31.078

Like, what's in it for them?

Justin Housman

00:27:31.134 - 00:27:37.606

Yeah, you know, I don't know, honestly. Good question. I mean, I've never understood any of the sponsorship thing. I really don't. I mean, like, you see a sticker on her helmet.

Colin True

00:27:37.638 - 00:27:37.894

Yeah.

Justin Housman

00:27:37.942 - 00:27:40.502

Pasta, you know, probably that's really it. Right. They know.

Colin True

00:27:40.526 - 00:27:47.250

She's trying to picture the meeting with like, guys, you know what we need to get bigger in snow sports. You know, they're not eating enough pasta over there. So what do we do?

Justin Housman

00:27:48.490 - 00:27:52.270

I mean, I've, I've, again, it's never really made a lot of sense to me, so.

Colin True

00:27:52.570 - 00:28:10.802

Well, that's kind of what I mean, like, going back with Adam X about, like, he's like, you know, and I, I get what he, I, I appreciate the sentiment of what he's saying because it's like he want, you know, athletes he wants them to get paid. I also think that it.

I guess mostly my beef is the, the they can't make a correlation between outdoor athletes and like, professional, like mainstream sports athletes. Those people generate income.

Justin Housman

00:28:10.866 - 00:28:11.714

Yeah, of course.

Colin True

00:28:11.802 - 00:28:17.468

This is. These are mostly people who are looking for gear to enable their outdoor activities and maybe make some money as well.

Justin Housman

00:28:17.524 - 00:28:17.932

Right.

Colin True

00:28:18.036 - 00:28:29.420

So there, and there are the Michaela Shifrins and the Jimmy Chins and the Alex Honnolds. And I get that.

But for the most part, most people you're going to see on an athlete team, unless you're really deep into the sport, you're probably not going to really know who it is.

Justin Housman

00:28:29.460 - 00:28:29.820

Yeah.

Colin True

00:28:29.900 - 00:28:31.356

Versus back in the day, we used to know.

Justin Housman

00:28:31.428 - 00:29:07.386

Yeah, I would think so.

I mean, like, I've heard of Liz Durstein probably, because I've probably written about her for something she did at Adventure Journal or something like that.

But I mean, if we haven't heard, like, if, frankly, if I don't know how this sounds, if someone like me hasn't heard of someone being sponsored by like a brand like that, like, there must be a huge social media influence. Otherwise, like, it's weird that I wouldn't know who that person is just because I spend all day scouring outdoor, outdoor news stuff all the time.

So it's like, well, there's no way some rando who's like walking into it to a REI is going to know who this person is. No way.

Colin True

00:29:07.458 - 00:29:10.266

All right, all right. So listeners, answer the question.

Justin Housman

00:29:10.338 - 00:29:10.922

This is a good one.

Colin True

00:29:10.946 - 00:29:21.670

I mean, answer it any way you feel comfortable. Like, do they matter? Will they influence what you'll buy? You know, what is the role of the athlete in outdoor. In the outdoor industry in 2025?

Justin Housman

00:29:22.210 - 00:29:22.842

I love that.

Colin True

00:29:22.866 - 00:29:23.530

We want to hear from you.

Justin Housman

00:29:23.570 - 00:29:24.730

Yeah, right.

Colin True

00:29:24.770 - 00:29:56.502

So send your replies and answers to myrockflightgmail.com. we want to hear from you on this topic. We're gonna have another topic for you next week, but send it in so we can answer your questions.

If you do, we'll send you stickers.

Maybe a little action figure action over there on our AI that makes those action figures Q and A Corner on the Rock Fight is presented by Oboz, who are helping us ask the question, how do I love hiking? And let me count the ways. Number one, we love hiking because hiking are leg days that don't suck. That's just true.

Justin Housman

00:29:56.566 - 00:29:56.950

Yeah.

Colin True

00:29:57.030 - 00:30:02.958

Number two, hiking is fresh air therapy with or without terror. Terry Gross. You can listen to Terry Gross while you're outside or you can.

Justin Housman

00:30:03.014 - 00:30:06.686

I've never Tried it with. I've never hiked. Listening to fresh air. That's a great idea.

Colin True

00:30:06.798 - 00:30:09.022

Terry Gross, I think. Available to go hiking with you, probably.

Justin Housman

00:30:09.086 - 00:30:13.278

I love Terry. Reach out to me on a hike.

Colin True

00:30:13.374 - 00:30:16.030

Dirt man. It's just nature's glitter. Let's be honest.

Justin Housman

00:30:16.110 - 00:30:16.974

That's a. What it is.

Colin True

00:30:16.982 - 00:30:17.950

That sounds yellow on you.

Justin Housman

00:30:17.990 - 00:30:20.110

Did you write that? That sounds like a Patty O'Connell joke.

Colin True

00:30:20.270 - 00:31:02.030

That was a. That was a David Carson joke. And hiking means finding your soulmate. In this case, Oboz. Excuse me.

In this case, roads, Rivers and trails of Milford, Ohio, which is one of Obo's soul mates. If you find yourself in the greater Milford area, pop in and say hi to the folks at Rhodes Rivers and Trails. Maybe buy yourself a pair of oboes.

And that also means maybe you could pick up a pair of oboes. Bangtail. Insulated, insulated winter hiking boot. There's plenty. I didn't write this.

There's plenty of winter left to justify picking up a pair of bang Tails. Featuring Vibram Arctic Grip outsole and be dry waterproof technology. But the number one reason to buy the bangtail. I wrote this part.

It's called the Bang Tail.

Justin Housman

00:31:03.570 - 00:31:06.630

It's Colin approved. He's never even. Wait, have you worn one?

Colin True

00:31:07.170 - 00:31:27.146

No. I have a pair coming to me, though. I'm very excited to try them out. Listen, Oboe's of the Cupid, the outdoor world.

All right, out of Bozeman, Montana. Oboes, they love hiking. All right, last story before we get to the parting shot. Rower. And I'm. I'm gonna mess up his name. Aramis. Aramis.

I'm going with Aramis. Aramis Machus.

Justin Housman

00:31:27.258 - 00:31:32.314

Did this person row out of the Rome like during, like 100 BC?

Colin True

00:31:32.442 - 00:31:36.378

Aramis, he was an extra on Gladiator 2. Just jumped right in his robot.

Justin Housman

00:31:36.394 - 00:31:38.470

Yeah, that's a name.

Colin True

00:31:39.010 - 00:31:44.282

So Armis Machus was attempting to cross the Pacific Ocean and row from San Diego to. Is it Brisbane or Brisbane?

Justin Housman

00:31:44.346 - 00:31:58.662

First of all, it's Brisbane. I have to. I'll have to say that is an amazing thing. Just because, like, Brisbane is 100, the San Diego of Australia. Like, there's no. Like.

I didn't realize that's where that's. That. I had no idea. Those are the two points they're trying to connect. That's hilarious to me.

Colin True

00:31:58.766 - 00:31:59.574

That's pretty funny.

Justin Housman

00:31:59.622 - 00:31:59.990

Yeah.

Colin True

00:32:00.070 - 00:32:14.038

Well, anyways, he was getting closer to Australia's eastern coast. Last Friday, he got caught in a cyclone and had to call for help.

According to Explorers Web, when the Royal Australian Navy reached him they saw his tiny boat being thrown about in terrifying seas. That's a quote from the article.

Justin Housman

00:32:14.094 - 00:32:16.650

You never want to hear the Navy refer to terrifying seas.

Colin True

00:32:17.180 - 00:32:20.052

Yeah, right. They. They know if they're terrifying or not.

Justin Housman

00:32:20.076 - 00:32:21.960

Yeah. Especially down there. Yeah.

Colin True

00:32:22.380 - 00:32:44.788

So then, according to the BBC, Marcus was finally rescued on Monday after three plus days of just holding on and waiting for rescue. So I wanted to ask you, like, how do we update the list of the scariest that can happen in the outdoors? Because we've talked a lot about.

About animal attacks on the show, but just being in a little rowboat being tossed around in giant seas, that might be that for days. This isn't like, I was like, oh, man, I can't. Few hours.

Justin Housman

00:32:44.924 - 00:32:47.864

I can't pick. I don't know which is scarier.

Colin True

00:32:47.992 - 00:32:55.592

Yeah, I mean, the bear thing, you're gonna know pretty quick what your fate is, right? Hopefully the boat. It's like, hey, man, it's Saturday.

Justin Housman

00:32:55.696 - 00:33:07.112

I feel like that might be scarier because you're. It's gonna hurt. Like, drowning doesn't hurt, I don't think. But, man, what could be. God, you'd feel so small, so helpless.

Colin True

00:33:07.176 - 00:33:10.856

The duration that he had to deal with that made me want to ask this question. Right.

Justin Housman

00:33:11.008 - 00:33:30.380

I'm literally getting the chills right now, and it could be because my fever is coming back, but I'm just imagining being on a tiny boat. And, like, by the way, Australia for the last, like, the.

The east coast of Australia, which is where Brisbane is for the last, like, week, has been pumping with the most unbelievable surf I have ever seen. And so that was a cycle that this poor bastard was caught in.

Colin True

00:33:30.760 - 00:33:36.060

So he's out there getting. You're watching YouTube videos of this guy's getting while this poor guy's getting knocked around.

Justin Housman

00:33:36.920 - 00:33:39.460

That is absolutely San Diego to Brisbane.

Colin True

00:33:42.040 - 00:33:43.280

He was out there for over five.

Justin Housman

00:33:43.320 - 00:33:51.282

You got to assume that people that do this kind of thing aren't as scared by open ocean as you and I would be, right? Like, who? Like, this would never occur to me.

Colin True

00:33:51.466 - 00:33:54.818

Oh, no. Like, give me anything else to do.

Justin Housman

00:33:54.874 - 00:34:01.730

There's no amount. Is there an amount of money? There's no amount of money for me. None. Someone's like a billion dollars. Colin, would you try it?

Colin True

00:34:01.850 - 00:34:04.482

I bet if we put down, like, a cool 500 grand in cash in.

Justin Housman

00:34:04.506 - 00:34:08.750

Front of you, you'd say, no. I would not. Not even close. Not even close.

Colin True

00:34:09.050 - 00:34:11.650

Just a pile of no bills bundled up.

Justin Housman

00:34:11.690 - 00:34:16.270

If I knew. Support boat, like, 30ft away from me at all times.

Colin True

00:34:16.720 - 00:34:19.112

It's the loneliness, man. Five months out there by yourself.

Justin Housman

00:34:19.176 - 00:34:23.144

By myself. With no support boat. I wouldn't. They're literally not. There's literally no amount of money. None.

Colin True

00:34:23.192 - 00:34:27.048

Yeah, none. That's that Robert Redford movie. What was the one where he gets on the sailboat?

Justin Housman

00:34:27.064 - 00:34:29.384

It's like the whole movie. He's just on the boat. Right. Like, that's the entire.

Colin True

00:34:29.432 - 00:34:37.336

But it just. It kind of reinforces what you're saying is that I would never want to do this. I have no interest in being out in the middle of the ocean on a.

On really any crash.

Justin Housman

00:34:37.368 - 00:34:42.177

Have you ever been on, like, a cruise or anything? Have you ever been on the open blue seas before?

Colin True

00:34:42.343 - 00:34:49.677

Like, straight away? I think I did like a.

We did a whale watch off the coast of New England once, and it was far enough out that you couldn't see land, and I didn't really like it.

Justin Housman

00:34:49.813 - 00:35:08.969

Yeah. I mean, we. I did.

I did a cruise once and, like, the last stretch was all just straight up, all day, all night, you know, steaming back north, you know, I don't know how far away from land you are, but, like, you are out there. And, like, that was epic. Ish. Even though you're on, like, a gigantic boat, you're still, like. It was. I get claustrophobic pretty quick.

Colin True

00:35:09.710 - 00:35:13.462

Yeah. I. I would launch me into space before putting me out in the middle of the ocean.

Justin Housman

00:35:13.526 - 00:35:25.622

Oh, boy. That's a tough call. I don't know. Again, don't know. I mean, the thing is, I feel like drowning. I've always heard the drowning is pretty peaceful.

I don't know how you. How do you know? Right? But like, that. It's relatively peaceful, like, at the end, and it just feels like at some point you just take a deep.

Colin True

00:35:25.686 - 00:35:26.134

They're dead.

Justin Housman

00:35:26.182 - 00:35:36.090

Deep breath underwater. Right. And that's it, you know, Like. Yeah. And like, I love the ocean, so in some ways it wouldn't be.

I don't know, but it's just so horrifying to contemplate.

Colin True

00:35:36.480 - 00:35:41.976

I love the ocean, too. I love being in it. I love going to it. But I think there comes. It becomes a point where it's the scariest place.

Justin Housman

00:35:42.048 - 00:35:53.112

Oh, dude. No question. No question. Yeah, I mean, I like, I. It's. It's been a while since I've been scared in the ocean. It's been.

It's been quite a while, but not. There's nothing else in my life that ever comes close to replicating that feeling. Nothing.

Colin True

00:35:53.176 - 00:35:57.000

That's because you're not hanging out with Armus. Marcus. He'll take you out the ocean and scare you a little bit.

Justin Housman

00:35:57.040 - 00:36:01.112

Surprised. Armus Moccasin just like roll right through that cyclone. I mean, he made it pretty damn far.

Colin True

00:36:01.296 - 00:36:16.534

Well, they talk about too. Before that happened, he got caught in a whirlpool and he had to backtrack and then was trying to make it like.

Made it like a hard push to towards Brisbane and. But then the cyclone hit, so. Five months. Guy's a stud price.

Justin Housman

00:36:16.622 - 00:36:18.198

So by the way, weathered and fucked.

Colin True

00:36:18.214 - 00:36:25.318

Up Q and A. Back to our Q A corner there. Someone signed Armis Marcus give that guy an athlete's contract. That guy deserves it.

Justin Housman

00:36:25.374 - 00:36:27.814

Yeah, I mean, I know who that is now. Yeah.

Colin True

00:36:27.862 - 00:36:29.270

I buy whatever he endorses.

Justin Housman

00:36:29.350 - 00:36:30.086

Yeah.

Colin True

00:36:30.278 - 00:36:31.686

All right, man. You ready for the parting shot?

Justin Housman

00:36:31.718 - 00:36:33.158

I'm ready for the parting shot.

Chris DeMakes

00:36:33.334 - 00:36:35.850

It's time for a party shot.

Colin True

00:36:37.160 - 00:36:39.020

Want. You want to go first? You want me to go first?

Justin Housman

00:36:39.480 - 00:36:40.400

I'll go first.

Colin True

00:36:40.520 - 00:36:41.744

All right, you go first.

Justin Housman

00:36:41.912 - 00:36:45.248

This is a. My parting shot's mean. It's a. It's a mean. It's mean.

Colin True

00:36:45.304 - 00:36:50.100

Oh. Oh. All right. Like cuz you're sick and you're not feeling good, you just want to be maybe.

Justin Housman

00:36:50.520 - 00:37:04.940

I know he's not listening to the podcast, so it doesn't really. It doesn't really matter, but my I. This. My favorite outdoor. My favorite outdoor writer. My favorite writer wrote a book recently.

His name is Peter Heller. It's called Burn. God, I love his work. He's a. He wrote the Dog Stars, which is like top five.

Colin True

00:37:05.320 - 00:37:06.176

Oh, you told me about.

Justin Housman

00:37:06.248 - 00:37:45.230

I've ever read. My God is good. The painter maybe is even better. His books are always virtually the same. Like a.

Like a smart outdoorsman who gets like caught up in something bad. Always. You know, it's no matter what. Like, that's. That's the effect. Sometimes there's two of them, but it's. That's always this. Always the same.

But he's the guy. Fly, fishes, he surfs a little bit. He's a dedicated outdoors person. But he's. He's just a beautiful writer. I mean, he. The man can write, but he wrote.

He wrote this book called Burn, and it's. It's the first clunker I read from him, but I don't even know where I want to go from it. Go with this as a parting shot.

Other than like, I guess, like don't release a book about civil war right now.

Colin True

00:37:46.570 - 00:37:48.802

Nobody life timing than this than the subject.

Justin Housman

00:37:48.866 - 00:39:25.650

Yeah. Like, I don't. He didn't pull it off, but it's like I don't there's no point at which I'm gonna feel good reading this book right now.

Like, there's not any point. Like, what is the. I get you're thinking about it, bro, but, like, it's not.

Like, I closed it when I was done with it, and I was just like, oh, you know, like, that's not. That's not good. Like, I didn't. I don't have any, like, insights into the nature of humanity. I didn't particularly enjoy reading it.

I just felt, like, kind of scared and uneasy afterward, and it's just like, I don't. Also, he had. Clearly, he had two ideas for a book, and he merged them together, and it was like, a real page turner for most of the.

Like, the main story of. It's two dudes who go hunting in Maine, and they get. When they. They're back there for, like, weeks, and they.

They emerge, and, like, the little villages around them are all, like, burnt to the ground. And, like, what the hell? Oh, there's, like, no cell reception. Nothing's going on.

They have to, like, piece together that there's been some sort of insurrection. And, like, Maine is trying to secede from the Union.

And, like, the federal government's, like, bringing hell to, like, rural Maine to the Kennebec Valley, which is such a funny concept, but that's. That's this. And you're like, okay. And it's, like, them trying to figure out where to go, what to do, whose side. They don't know whose side to be on.

Like, they have no idea what the hell's going on. They don't live in Maine. They're just there. And, like. And so.

But then it's like, half the book is these, like, pointless flashbacks to when they're kids, and, like, one of them sleeps with the other one's mom. You're like, dude, I don't give a shit. Just, like, flipping through 20 pages at a time. I want to get. Where did those helicopters go?

Like, who's the guy with the gun? Like, it just. Just. It's just so annoying.

I'm sitting here, I'm dead sick, like, reading my favorite author of all time's book, and I'm just like, God, this book isn't even that good. I don't know what my parting shot is. Just don't. Don't bother with the book, I guess. Didn't like it.

Colin True

00:39:26.030 - 00:39:30.854

I'm surprised that it was the. You know, the Civil War you're trying to get back to and not the mom porn.

Justin Housman

00:39:30.902 - 00:39:36.748

I'd be more into the mom porn. I know. I guess I'm not in the mood when you're. When you're like 102 degrees fever, you're.

Colin True

00:39:36.764 - 00:39:38.796

Like, I gotta get back to Ghostbusters. Yeah.

Justin Housman

00:39:38.828 - 00:39:47.020

Frozen Empire in a horny mood. But like. And like, I don't even want. That's another part. It's like, I don't want to read about Civil War at all right now.

Colin True

00:39:47.060 - 00:39:48.492

Yeah, but like. Yeah, no, no, but it's still.

Justin Housman

00:39:48.516 - 00:39:51.964

At least it's action. And it's like, I want to know what happens to the characters. And you're just like.

Colin True

00:39:52.052 - 00:39:54.828

Do you think if it was like. Like 10 years? I mean, like, if it was.

Justin Housman

00:39:54.884 - 00:39:55.564

Oh, yeah.

Colin True

00:39:55.692 - 00:39:57.228

In a different time frame, it would have been.

Justin Housman

00:39:57.364 - 00:40:07.648

No, I still. I still would have. I still would have been like, why was this.

Why was this not just a 30 page book about the cool part and then as opposed to a 200 page book where you clearly were just like filling it, you know? So.

Colin True

00:40:07.704 - 00:40:08.592

Yeah, Yeah.

Justin Housman

00:40:08.656 - 00:40:12.928

I don't know. Just. Sorry. Just didn't care for.

Colin True

00:40:12.984 - 00:40:13.280

All right.

Justin Housman

00:40:13.320 - 00:40:13.952

Didn't care for the book.

Colin True

00:40:13.976 - 00:40:16.752

Well, there you go. Good parting shot. Sorry, Peter Heller, you're in the crosshairs this week.

Justin Housman

00:40:16.776 - 00:40:17.936

Yeah, don't do that again.

Colin True

00:40:18.008 - 00:40:18.700

My part.

Justin Housman

00:40:19.000 - 00:40:33.356

He also, I should say in his defense, he really is my favorite writer. He also wrote the only book that I've ever truly, truly loved, but also threw across the room in anger at one point.

Have you ever thrown a book because of what you read in it because you were so mad?

Colin True

00:40:33.388 - 00:40:35.052

I don't know if I have. Yeah, no, I don't think I have.

Justin Housman

00:40:35.076 - 00:40:50.812

One time I ever have. Like, I mean, I've thrown a book, but like, just reading it, you're like, nah, I just threw it.

Like, that's how good that one of his books called the river, which I truly love is. And so anyway, so he's a dude. The dude rocks. But, like, you know, they can't all be bangers.

Colin True

00:40:50.956 - 00:41:03.394

That's true. Yeah, that's true.

Well, my parting shot, according to Muscle and Fitness.com Studies show, Justin, I don't know if you heard this this week, that swearing can actually boost physical performance and lead to an increase in pain tolerance.

Justin Housman

00:41:03.442 - 00:41:04.386

Fuck yes.

Colin True

00:41:04.578 - 00:41:11.538

Right? See, there we go. Combine that with other studies that show that people who swear have higher intelligence than those who do not. Fuck.

You know about that, right?

Justin Housman

00:41:11.594 - 00:41:13.202

Yes. Did you just make that up?

Colin True

00:41:13.386 - 00:41:14.866

No, that's real. That's a real thing.

Justin Housman

00:41:14.938 - 00:41:16.258

That's weird. Sorry.

Colin True

00:41:16.354 - 00:41:35.630

I mean, I kind of like to give Myself credit for that. But no, there's studies to prove that there's literally like, higher intelligence of people who use curse words.

So I'm calling on our puritanical world to abandon the phrase bad words. I want to hear priests and Mormons chanting fuck you, cuntwad sporting events.

I want to hear preschoolers throwing tantrums and telling their parents to off.

Justin Housman

00:41:35.750 - 00:41:40.510

I don't want to hear that because if my kids try that with me, it's not going to go well. Yeah, not going to go well.

Colin True

00:41:40.550 - 00:41:46.766

I want. I want to hear people with political debates, like, start, like, responses like, man, that's. How great would that be?

Justin Housman

00:41:46.838 - 00:41:51.970

I don't know. I mean, I don't know if I would like that or not. I do like decorum in some places.

Colin True

00:41:52.310 - 00:41:57.278

No, come on, man. Swearing makes us smarter and apparently stronger, so everyone needs to do it.

Justin Housman

00:41:57.334 - 00:42:05.518

The stronger pain tolerance thing, 100, dude. Like, the second someone like you have never, like, stepped on something and not been, like, ever. Right?

Colin True

00:42:05.654 - 00:42:12.606

Did you hear that? The caught, like, hot on hot mic. The. The hockey announcer. Did you hear that? And Hawkins are literally during the game.

Justin Housman

00:42:12.678 - 00:42:14.942

The puck, the announcer, like the play.

Colin True

00:42:15.046 - 00:42:27.350

The guy calling the game. No. Yeah, the. The play by play on TV or whatever radio. And he. And it's soon. He. He's like. He's like. And the. The pass goes to it. You go, here.

I'm going to hit him right in the head. Yeah, Totally caught on the hot mic. I'm like, yeah. Yes.

Justin Housman

00:42:27.430 - 00:42:27.830

Yeah.

Colin True

00:42:27.910 - 00:42:29.014

He's dealing with the pain.

Justin Housman

00:42:29.062 - 00:42:38.130

Yeah. Yeah. Somehow it works. It helps. I. I love the idea that it makes you, like, more like, like stronger somehow. But I mean, that's a. That's a great study.

Colin True

00:42:38.590 - 00:42:44.278

Yeah, I'm into it. I mean, maybe like, instead of hgh, you just got to, like, swear and yell a lot of swear words and you'll get.

Justin Housman

00:42:44.414 - 00:42:50.582

Believe me, if that worked, I would be. I would be. I look like that dude who plays Reacher on the. On that. That show.

Colin True

00:42:50.766 - 00:42:52.886
