And now back to the show. All right, it's Wednesday. We're here with Shantae and Shantae.
I need to start something that I discovered today that I'm a little mad that I Didn't know already because I was doing some research as one does for our podcast.
Shawnté Salabert
00:03:01.680 - 00:03:02.720
Oh yes, so much research.
Colin True
00:03:02.800 - 00:03:09.200
And I was looking at the. Not to say it twice in the same show, the cornucopia of Everest stories that are now on Explorer's Web.
Shawnté Salabert
00:03:09.200 - 00:03:12.280
Where are you just looking at like fruit baskets?
Colin True
00:03:12.280 - 00:03:17.680
It's just an apt word. You know, I'm a big Thanksgiving guy. I don't care if it's May, I'll invoke Thanksgiving.
Shawnté Salabert
00:03:18.000 - 00:03:19.200
Dreaming of stuffing right now.
Colin True
00:03:20.590 - 00:03:24.910
When are you never not dreaming of stuff? Stuffing rules. You aren't because it'll make. It'll hurt your belly.
Shawnté Salabert
00:03:24.910 - 00:03:27.830
It will. But there's really good gluten free stuffing out there. I was actually.
Colin True
00:03:27.830 - 00:03:28.430
Oh, that's good.
Shawnté Salabert
00:03:28.430 - 00:03:50.990
I'm trying to get together all my resupply packaging for I'm doing a couple weeks on the trail this summer. So I'm starting to do my food planning which is always deeply exciting and I was hoping. I totally biffed this year though.
And I did not buy any gluten free stuffing at the end of the holiday season. So no mashed potatoes, stuffing and gluten free gravy for me on trail. Unless someone wants to send me a box real quick.
Colin True
00:03:51.710 - 00:04:05.750
Anyway, new sponsor opportunity. Well, actually it's kind of apt for what I was going to say.
There's a mountain in the Himalaya very close to Mount Everest that is related to what happens to you if you were to eat regular stuffing. This mountain is called Shartzy Shart Sea.
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:05.750 - 00:04:12.030
I'm pretty sure you're saying that wrong. No, no. Yes, yes. There is not a mountain named Shart Sea.
Colin True
00:04:12.410 - 00:04:18.010
It's S H A R T S E. It's Nopy Lotsy and Shartie.
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:18.250 - 00:04:21.610
See, I believe like the R is silent. It's like Shotzi.
Colin True
00:04:22.330 - 00:04:23.930
It's like a Shartzy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:24.170 - 00:04:37.930
I don't know. I mean again, I'm not mad at it. You know me, my track history of what I like to talk to talk about on this podcast. But yeah. Wow.
I can't believe you saw that and then thought of me. I don't know if I should be honored or.
Colin True
00:04:37.930 - 00:04:46.430
Well, I thought I should add it to the outline at least cuz it's called Shartzy. And look, I'll. If. If I have to just if. But whatever.
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:46.430 - 00:04:51.910
Either way, that's like my 90s R&B. I'm like Sade's like secret backup singer maybe.
Colin True
00:04:52.550 - 00:04:54.550
Are we gonna start a singer career for you?
Shawnté Salabert
00:04:54.550 - 00:05:02.070
And you're gonna go as Shartay Yeah. Yeah. That'll be my next. My next side project. My next side quest. I've got time.
Colin True
00:05:02.790 - 00:05:10.150
I did think we needed to put a moratorium on poop talk for this episode, simply because I had a colonoscopy on Friday and I was kind of over talking about poop after the.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:10.230 - 00:05:11.310
Why didn't you text me afterwards?
Colin True
00:05:11.310 - 00:05:11.950
Oh, I should have.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:11.950 - 00:05:13.030
I wish I had known.
Colin True
00:05:13.660 - 00:05:21.420
I had a lot to brag about because. Zero polyps. Oh, great job saying 10 years. 10 years. I got 10 years before I got to do it again.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:21.420 - 00:05:43.530
I mean, I did it before you, so I was actually. I was an early adopter of the colonoscopy this year, claiming colonoscopies. I am. Yeah, I know.
We don't know the results yet of the Outdoor Town draft and whose draft is gonna be the winner. I hope it's mine. But just in case I want to win something, so I'm going to claim first colonoscopy of the year since I did mine in January.
Colin True
00:05:44.410 - 00:05:51.050
Well, I'm glad to know that you're part of the zero polyp club and you have the 10 year window as well. I was pretty excited about that. I figured there'd be at least one in there.
Shawnté Salabert
00:05:51.930 - 00:06:35.110
This is great. The only thing for me is that I woke up during mine. My body is absolutely resistant to being knocked out, apparently, because when I.
The very first time I ever got anesthesia was when my wisdom teeth were all impacted in there and they had to yank them out, and so they put me under. I woke up while the dentist was still doing things in my mouth. We're not finished with the procedure. And then they put me back under.
And so I told the doctor, I told the anesthesiologist. I was like, hey, my body's a little, you know, resistant to anesthesia. Make sure I stay out, please.
I don't want to wake up, like, mid colonoscopy, which is exactly what happened. And they had me facing the monitor so I could see the inside of my colon, which is something that was both terrifying and sort of thrilling, so.
Colin True
00:06:35.670 - 00:06:36.470
Oh, that's great.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:36.710 - 00:06:41.630
Yeah. I don't want to do it again, if I'm being honest, because they knocked me back out once. Once.
Colin True
00:06:41.630 - 00:06:42.550
I hope so.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:42.550 - 00:06:43.990
Something like, hey, I'm awake.
Colin True
00:06:45.210 - 00:06:48.010
Oh, my God. Everyone started screaming. You know, there's like, chaos in the room.
Shawnté Salabert
00:06:48.010 - 00:06:49.130
The doctor goes, oh.
Colin True
00:06:51.290 - 00:07:03.250
Well, besides the potential life saving, you know, part of having a colonoscopy, if you're ever interested in having all the symptoms of a stomach virus with none of the stomach cramps. I recommend it because that's basically what happens for 36 hours. So enjoy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:03.250 - 00:07:06.730
That reminds me of my giardia experience on the trail.
Colin True
00:07:07.290 - 00:07:22.270
That sounds. That was probably way worse. Cause also you were on the trail being the operative word. Yeah, exactly. So. All right, let's get into it.
We have our top stories today, which are presented by your hub for ultralight gear, ggg, garage grown gear, you know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:22.510 - 00:07:24.190
You know who I just got a package from today?
Colin True
00:07:24.990 - 00:07:25.550
Garage.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:25.710 - 00:07:29.750
I did. Yeah, Garage grown gear. I ordered a whole bunch of stuff.
Colin True
00:07:29.750 - 00:07:31.790
Because some refer to that as ggg. I've heard.
Shawnté Salabert
00:07:31.790 - 00:07:35.070
Nobody does. Nobody does. Except for you, unfortunately.
Colin True
00:07:36.750 - 00:08:11.610
So per the inertia, nearly. I had to double check this like three times to make sure I wasn't like misremembering it or like just got it wrong.
100,000 new mountains were discovered below the ocean surface as a result of swat, which is the Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission, which is attempting to survey the ocean as well as the bottom of the ocean. I just wanted to add this to our outline because the ocean still remains an incredible place that is largely unexplored.
But so knowing that there are huge mountain ranges under the water is pretty amazing. But it's also kind of funny because it's like, well, who cares? They're underwater. Like, what are we gonna do? What do we do with that information?
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:11.690 - 00:08:13.610
We're sending the ocean down there.
Colin True
00:08:14.470 - 00:08:26.550
Well, right. I mean, someone right now is reading that article and is finding out a way to, quote, unquote, summit these peaks.
So I'm going to trademark the underwater fkt later today and then just plan to get rich later.
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:27.190 - 00:08:37.110
I. I wish nothing but success for you, Colin. After listening it's gonna happen. The Titan submersible was kind of my breaking point. Well, it.
You know what? It actually wasn't my breaking point for underwater.
Colin True
00:08:37.110 - 00:08:41.110
It was their breaking point. Oh, was it too soon?
Shawnté Salabert
00:08:43.670 - 00:09:08.690
No, but honestly, the ocean terr me it's really scary. And you know, I think the lar a large part of why it terrifies me a I was an inland child. I grew up in Wisconsin, but I did grow up in Milwaukee.
Lake Michigan is right there. So it's not like I'm afraid of all waters, but the ocean just seems there's a lot of unknown.
Like, I remember seeing James Cameron's IMAX movie Aliens of the Deep, which was unnecessarily terrifying. Like, did he have to make it that scary?
Colin True
00:09:08.850 - 00:09:11.250
It was Jim Cameron. Big Jim. Of course he did.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:11.890 - 00:09:24.510
I was with two kids. I was. I was babysitting for some kids at the time and they wanted to see it. And then they both started crying about 10 minutes in, so we had to.
But it was enough for me, too. I was like, no, I'm actually good too. It's enough deep ocean.
Colin True
00:09:25.150 - 00:09:37.590
Can we get Big Jim to go back to that, though, versus another three hour Avatar movie, which we're getting this December, which could be amazing if it was like an hour and 20 minutes. But it's always like triple the length that it needs to be. That's my feeling.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:37.590 - 00:09:42.590
Listen, the longer the movie, the more the money. So that's. I'm pretty sure in his head that's how it works out.
Colin True
00:09:42.670 - 00:09:44.990
It isn't. It's fewer screens, it's fewer show times.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:45.150 - 00:09:51.530
Yeah. But just so much. I don't know. I don't actually know. Listen, it's just an exercise. Exercise an ego, I think, at this point.
Colin True
00:09:51.610 - 00:09:55.130
So probably they are incredible looking movies.
Shawnté Salabert
00:09:55.130 - 00:10:13.250
But here's what he should do is he should get.
Get Jared Leto, get Jason Momoa, but dressed as Aquaman, and then he should take them to the hundred thousand underwater mountains on the floor of the ocean and then do some. And then Jimmy Chin has to be involved in some way probably.
Colin True
00:10:13.250 - 00:10:15.450
You know, he's another filmmaker, technical director.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:15.690 - 00:10:23.990
You know, And I think they can get like a really exciting Vertical Limits style underwater film out of this that I would be thrilled to watch.
Colin True
00:10:24.870 - 00:10:26.070
Why Jared Leto.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:26.150 - 00:10:36.310
Well, didn't. He did that. I don't know. I think if he's a climber and an actor, I feel like also, you know, just put him under the sea, I think that's fine.
Whether or not he comes back is not up to me. So.
Colin True
00:10:36.950 - 00:10:51.290
Yeah, I don't know.
But eventually I think we're going to go down, you know, whatever, 30 miles under the ocean and there's going to be like, rebar, like stuck into the side of these mountains and people like, pulling themselves along. I don't know. There's going to be something that they do with these mountains. There's no way.
These mountains don't go untouched by, you know, glory seeker adventurers.
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:51.290 - 00:10:53.410
Yeah. Seeking adventures. Nims Perja is already looking at it.
Colin True
00:10:55.330 - 00:10:56.930
Are we allowed to say his name? Are we?
Shawnté Salabert
00:10:57.090 - 00:10:59.530
I don't. I'm not keeping up on anything. Oh, my God.
Colin True
00:10:59.530 - 00:11:05.210
I'm just bringing up all the sexual assault allegations on this podcast. I think he was. That was him, right? Wasn't it?
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:05.210 - 00:11:06.850
I think you're right. Oh, man.
Colin True
00:11:07.650 - 00:11:15.770
It's just. It's never safe. It's not it's like, am I allowed to like, watch the, you know, the, the Usual Suspects and enjoy it? I really want to.
That movie's amazing.
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:15.770 - 00:11:17.530
You just don't tell anybody that you enjoy it.
Colin True
00:11:17.530 - 00:11:18.730
You just can't, right?
Shawnté Salabert
00:11:18.730 - 00:11:19.490
Keep that in your heart.
Colin True
00:11:20.380 - 00:12:09.320
Bummer. All right, next story. According to vcstar.com, a 38 year old man died during a Southern California Trail Half marathon and Thousand Oaks. Excuse me.
Due to high temperatures on the day of the event. In addition to that, three other people had to be hospitalized after taking part in the Boney Mountain Trail Run Half Marathon. All heat related.
The course featured four aid stations, which. That's an obscene amount of aid stations for a 13 mile course. Right? That's like one every less than four miles, basically.
So they definitely had opportunities to. I definitely feel for the gentleman who passed away and his family, but I also really feel for the race director in this point.
I mean, it's a hot day with temps in the 90s, but that's not that unusual for even this time of year for Thousand Oaks. It gets hot there, you know, I don't know, this all just seems like an outlier. I hope that no one from the event gets blamed for this.
Shawnté Salabert
00:12:09.320 - 00:13:54.500
No. That was such a heartbreaking story to read. So I'm familiar.
I've actually volunteered several times with this race company at SoCal Trail races and they've run great races. I know one of the people, people on the team really, really well. She's an incredible person and has done a lot in the running community locally.
And I've met the race director. He's great. You know, it's just like such an unfortunate thing.
And it got me thinking about, you know, being in Southern California doing trail races, which I've done. My, my complaint is always like, I'm very sensitive to the heat and so I wish we could start like when I'm running on my own.
And this is why I don't sign up for a lot of trail races in the summer.
I start at 5am you know, if I'm going out on a run because I'm just, I am really susceptible to heat related illness and I don't want to take my chances out there. It's not worth it for me.
Um, but it is something to think about like this, the, the race started at 8, I believe, and this race was actually supposed to happen back in February, but we had storms and then there was erosion and things like that. And you also have to be thoughtful about the local trails when it rains here.
Um, so it's just all around, like, bad timing and bad luck and just horrible, horrible news. But I really do think. I mean, these races are run very well, and I've. I usually am always volunteering at one of the aid stations myself.
Like, I always do hydration and they do a great job at SoCal Trail races providing that. Um, but, yeah, it's. It's so heartbreaking. And I don't know whether he might have had some underlying health conditions.
You know, so many of us have things just kicking around in our bodies that we don't know about, and then something happens and it's just. Yeah. Such sad news, but a reminder to everybody, too, to just be really. You know, there's no race that's worth winning if death is the outcome.
Colin True
00:13:54.740 - 00:14:04.100
Oh, yeah. Yeah. I have definitely, you know, you know, not maybe during a race, but, like, just out for a run or doing something. It's like, it's too hot.
It's time to go home, you know, just like, just packing it up. This is silly.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:04.100 - 00:14:08.260
I need to go lay on the couch and ice myself. Yeah, just a full body icing maybe.
Colin True
00:14:08.900 - 00:14:09.220
Right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:09.220 - 00:14:10.020
A cold plunge, but.
Colin True
00:14:10.020 - 00:14:27.720
Yeah, but I wouldn't. It does seem like it's kind of shocking to read that. I thought for sure, like, oh, hit 110 out or something like that, like 90s.
Like, you know, that's sort of on the. The edge of, like, when I'm starting to think about doing something else.
But it's like, it's not unlikely that I would go out and try something in that kind of temperature. So I just. I feel for everybody involved. This is.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:27.720 - 00:14:49.910
Sucks, you know, and we don't have a lot of trees down here, so you got that playing into it, too. It's all chaparral on those trails. Like, it's such a gorgeous trail. I've been back there before. I've actually volunteered at that race.
Stunning area, but, yeah, you don't have a ton of shade opportunities either. So it's really about Matt, like, managing yourself out there as well. And. Yeah, just. My heart goes out to his family and everybody.
Colin True
00:14:50.630 - 00:14:59.590
Yeah, same, same. If there's any updates, we will. We'll talk about here on the show in the future, but.
Hey, Shantae, do you want to know what's new at Garage Growing gear besides.
Shawnté Salabert
00:14:59.590 - 00:15:00.630
What I just bought from them?
Colin True
00:15:02.150 - 00:15:07.590
Do you. Do you want. You might be excited about this. Stick Stashers 2.0 are here. Do you know about Stick Stashers?
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:07.670 - 00:15:12.390
I. Nope. Not at all. You do it or is it Place to put your sticks.
Colin True
00:15:13.030 - 00:15:17.790
You nailed it. Do you ever want to stow away your trekking poles on a hike but don't want to take your pack off to do so?
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:17.790 - 00:15:18.510
Why, yes, I do.
Colin True
00:15:18.510 - 00:15:43.610
Stick Stashers. New, Improved. Well, here you go. Stick Stasher's new and improved design makes it easier than ever to stash your poles in mere seconds.

Shawnté Salabert
00:15:43.610 - 00:15:46.170
At Garage Grown Gear.
Colin True
00:15:47.610 - 00:15:50.890
You sounded like a mom like chastising their guinea gear because I know you.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:50.890 - 00:15:54.370
Were gonna say ggg. Cause I see it in the show notes. You know what it is?
Colin True
00:15:54.370 - 00:15:55.290
Garage Grown Gear.
Shawnté Salabert
00:15:55.290 - 00:15:59.250
It's your hub for all things ultralight backpacking. Ask me now, was your hand on.
Colin True
00:15:59.250 - 00:16:01.690
Your hip when you were pointing, were you pointing at me?
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:03.050 - 00:16:42.310
I was giving you the. This like the finger, but it's like the teacher finger. But also.
Wait, all this, this is the best ad because now I need to know what the NB air is because I do have a night core.
Oh, and also I will say for anybody considering Alpha Direct Fleece, I love I have an Alpha Direct Fleece hoodie by Senshi and then I have bottoms by totally biffing forgetting who the bottoms are by. Anyway, I a Farpoint Farpoint, which I think I bought on Garage Grown Gear. Anyway, super warm, warmth to weight ratio is unbeatable.
You just need to have some sort of windbreak on if you're going to be wearing it in the breeze.
Colin True
00:16:42.310 - 00:16:58.190
But yes, that is not a. Not for limiting airflow. I love this kind of stuff though. Like, this is where. Okay, innovation alive and well. Stick Stashers.
Someone's like, how do I. I just want to put my sticks away. And they had a little magnet thing, so I got to check that out too.
Shawnté Salabert
00:16:58.190 - 00:16:59.820
I am curious. I am stick curious.
Colin True
00:17:00.450 - 00:17:24.610
All right, new segment. It's time for outdoor Pop Culture Watch, presented by Oboz, who loves hiking. And as the cupid of the outdoors, Oboz wants to help.
You love hiking just as much as they do. So a few trailers, few things coming up in the old pop culture scene.
If you've listened to Shantae on here with me, you know, over the past couple years, and especially lately, we love ourselves some pop culture stuff. We like Movies, tv, music, it's what we like.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:25.090 - 00:17:36.180
Absolute nerds for it. I mean, it's. And I love that we don't always agree about it, which is also my favorite because any chance for Friction.
You know, me and podcast Friction. Big fan.
Colin True
00:17:37.540 - 00:17:41.940
That's the name of the game. You know, let's listen to the podcast where everybody agrees all the time.
Shawnté Salabert
00:17:42.100 - 00:17:42.580
Boring.
Colin True
00:17:44.100 - 00:18:46.730
Well, first one, a trailer dropped a new film by the North Face. It's called the North Face Trango Film. The Synopsis is, at 6,000 meters, trust in your team means everything.
The North Face athletes Christina Lusty, Jim Morrison, Nick McNutt and Chantal Astorga navigate unimaginable risk, grief, and constant exposure as they attempt the impossible. The first ski descent of the great Trango Glacier. If you watch this trailer and I'll link it in the show notes, it's kind of a throwback.
It really reminds me of a lot of like, sort of the sort of mountain films we would get in the 90s, early 2000s, things like that. Those big, inspirational, sweeping vistas and, you know, people fighting against the elements to achieve their goals and isn't it badass?
The kind of stuff that really, I think, inspired our generation.
But I do know that if I ever watch this movie, I'll probably think it's overly earnest and could probably be bored by the million of tropes that I've already seen in other films. I'm so jaded, right? I really am. But man, do I love a well cut expedition trailer.
You know, I think the premise of the movie will be better than the movie itself is my prediction. But I'll definitely watch this.
Shawnté Salabert
00:18:46.970 - 00:19:08.170
I mean, wow. I feel like ever since Meru, climbing film trailers are basically like the trailer for Cliffhanger minus Stallone. But would I watch it? Hell yeah.
I love a good climbing film. The North Face did an amazing film about Hillary Nelson's ski descent of Lazy. Like, speaking of other Himalayan peaks.
Colin True
00:19:08.170 - 00:19:09.050
Not shartzy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:19:09.050 - 00:19:18.090
Not shartzy. I can't. Oh, wow. Okay. I'm gonna have to look up the actual pronunciation of that when we get done recording because I can't explain.
Colin True
00:19:18.090 - 00:19:21.050
I can't wait for you to tell me. Oh, my God, it's actually Shartzy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:19:21.130 - 00:19:24.170
I won't tell you. I'll be like, what? I don't remember us having this.
Colin True
00:19:24.250 - 00:19:25.690
I never said I was gonna look that up.
Shawnté Salabert
00:19:26.630 - 00:19:46.950
No, I really. The North Face does make some excellent films. I mean, they clearly have the money behind it. They have the production values.
They always bring on amazing teams. Like, they Always, they always deliver. So whether or not it's your thing, you know, you're going to get what they are bringing to you.
Like, they're gonna go in, they're gonna create a story, there's gonna be drama, and it's going to be beautifully shot. So I will absolutely watch it.
Colin True
00:19:47.590 - 00:20:07.020
I think it's. It's gonna come down to the runtime because if it's a. If this is like a 12 minute, 1212 to 20 minute kind of thing, it'll probably be great.
Sometimes these I've seen I think maybe some arc' teryx films or something recently where it's like 55 minutes and I'm like, yeah, I'm not really down for, you know, outdoor drama for 55 minutes. Like, set it up, pay it off, let's get out of here.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:07.020 - 00:20:15.260
You know, what if it was into the Void, part two? He went back, they went back, they.
Colin True
00:20:15.260 - 00:20:17.780
Went back to reevaluate and the same thing happened.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:17.780 - 00:20:23.430
But can you imagine by arc' teryx this time, Jimmy Chinn is directing.
Colin True
00:20:24.470 - 00:20:26.550
Well, now. Okay, you're talking me into it.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:26.630 - 00:20:28.630
You don't know. Don't write it all off.
Colin True
00:20:28.710 - 00:20:55.870
All right. The next movie that's coming out and I sent you this trailer a couple of weeks ago and it comes out, I think in a week. It's called the North.
And the synopsis of this movie, again, trailer's in the show notes. What is it like to hike 600km with your oldest friend? The north is a fiction film.
Following Luis and Chris as they hike the West Highland Way and the Cape Wrath Trail. Walk alongside them through Scottish rain midges, mountains and the vast soundscapes of the Highlands. I am genuinely excited for this.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:55.870 - 00:20:56.710
Oh, I know you are.
Colin True
00:20:56.710 - 00:20:57.870
You know, right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:20:57.870 - 00:20:59.710
You've texted me about it multiple times.
Colin True
00:21:00.270 - 00:21:25.890
It's such a cool premise. So for the listener, this. They actually filmed this while out backpacking. The story is fiction, but they filmed it while out.
I don't know if they actually threw hike to the trail or if they just went as long as they had to to film the movie, but. So it's an authentic documentary of the backpacking part of it.
But then there's a story that built into it, which usually a lot of outdoor films is where they kind of lose me after a while. It's like I don't really care.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:25.890 - 00:21:26.490
Right, right.
Colin True
00:21:26.490 - 00:21:35.770
It's like I don't want to just watch people skiing or people doing whatever. So it's kind of like this to me is the solution, like create real movies, but with Real outdoor activities.
Shawnté Salabert
00:21:35.850 - 00:22:01.030
I know, I love it. I mean I'm sure they have different filming requirements or permit requirements out there because you would never have that happen here.
You can't just be. I'm going to go hike the JMT and film a narrative film while I'm doing it. Then again, mile. Mile and a half.
That documentary that everybody loves about that TR is out and about. But I don't. Yeah, I think getting a filming. I don't think those guys got filming permits, but actually they might have.
Colin True
00:22:01.270 - 00:22:08.590
Well the. The explore act just addressed that. Right.
Didn't the explorer have a whole thing about now you can film in national parks and things like that or more avenues in order to film.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:08.590 - 00:22:14.870
Yeah, I think they're opening it up for that. For more of that or just make it easier because you can, you have. But you have to go through the permitting process, so.
Colin True
00:22:15.030 - 00:22:15.990
Right, right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:15.990 - 00:22:41.480
But no, I mean I will, I will. I do think it's a really interesting premise. I love the idea of that kind of mix of authentic real action and then the narrative behind it.
I think it's a really creative idea. I'm curious to see how the narrative goes. Like is it a strong story or is it just like. Okay, it's a cool idea in a pretty setting.
So I think it's a good point. I think I gotta watch this. I gotta watch this before we talk about it again.
Colin True
00:22:42.040 - 00:22:48.440
Yeah, we will absolutely be reviewing this when it comes out. Cause if it. Well, depending on how long. If it ends up just being bad, we can't finish it. Bad.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:48.440 - 00:22:50.120
Pretend we never said anything about it.
Colin True
00:22:50.120 - 00:22:51.400
Yeah, no, remember that it was.
Shawnté Salabert
00:22:52.100 - 00:22:55.260
Who brought it up. Okay. Listener again.
Colin True
00:22:55.260 - 00:23:01.700
I'm hoping like this could be. This is. It doesn't even need to be over an hour. You know, 55 minutes. You know, what's up with you?
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:01.700 - 00:23:03.660
Like what's. What happens if it's him?
Colin True
00:23:03.660 - 00:23:05.060
Over the long run times, I think.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:05.620 - 00:23:07.220
Am I getting to you?
Colin True
00:23:07.220 - 00:23:07.620
I.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:07.860 - 00:23:11.860
Well, I mean three. Yes. James Cameron three hour epics. Kibosh.
Colin True
00:23:11.860 - 00:23:15.620
I'm not as a little much but. Well, it's just they never have the story to support it. That's the problem.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:15.860 - 00:23:16.700
That's the whole point here.
Colin True
00:23:16.700 - 00:23:30.430
Maybe then it's great. I love like Avengers Endgame. Great movie. Three hours long. Love that movie. But usually we don't get like 90 minute movies anymore.
Like when we were growing up there were a lot of like 85 minute runtime.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:30.510 - 00:23:38.830
Nobody is saying no to filmmakers anymore is what's happening. There's like somehow we. We've Lost that middle tier of, like, no sayers and everybody is a yes, ma' am, right?
Colin True
00:23:39.310 - 00:23:49.310
Seriously. All right. Last trailer that came out this week was you versus Wild, season eight, apparently. I didn't know there were eight seasons of this.
This is Bear Grylls show where he.
Shawnté Salabert
00:23:49.770 - 00:23:50.650
One season of this.
Colin True
00:23:51.130 - 00:24:15.930
Me either. I saw. I went trolling around on Netflix because they have a lot of good adventure shows like, oh, let's do a TV show.
And I'm like, oh, my God, Bear Grylls, you versus Wild. And then as I was preparing for this, I realized that it's been out for, like, six years.
So this is the show where Bear Grylls goes out into nature and makes key decisions. The viewers help him make key decisions to help Bear survive and thrive and complete missions in the harshest environments on Earth. What do you.
What do you. What do you got for Bear? What do you think about Bear?
Shawnté Salabert
00:24:16.410 - 00:24:43.630
I know. Okay, I'll give the man. I'll give the man credit. He's a very experienced outdoorsman, but, oh, my God, he is so damn corny. I cannot.
It's adventuretainment. Like, I. Back in the day, if you were gonna ask me, are you into Bear Grylls or are you into Survivorman? I'm going full Survivorman.
You know, he shows you how he gets his camera angles. He's setting it all up himself. He's a lot more down to earth. He's Canadian. You know, he's.
Colin True
00:24:43.630 - 00:24:44.590
Why did he just say.
Shawnté Salabert
00:24:45.790 - 00:24:57.670
I don't know why I just said Canadian. Like that. Canadian. Just a. Just a small man. I don't know why. I'm so sorry. Less. Less Stroud. Survivor man.
Colin True
00:24:57.670 - 00:24:59.230
Sorry. Canada is what you should be.
Shawnté Salabert
00:24:59.230 - 00:25:01.710
I'm not. I would love Canada. Please adopt me.
Colin True
00:25:02.270 - 00:25:03.950
Yeah, no kidding. Take me to Canada.
Shawnté Salabert
00:25:04.030 - 00:25:04.670
It's nice.
Colin True
00:25:04.670 - 00:25:05.230
Yeah, me too.
Shawnté Salabert
00:25:05.230 - 00:25:53.670
It's. People are generally nice, but I would. I would be a full on 110 Survivor man. Like, put me in, buddy. I won't come hang with you.
Bear Grylls, I think, would get on every single last one of my available nerves and then maybe even some that aren't available. Available. I don't know. He's just. I can't watch long stints with him. I did enjoy. Wasn't it him that did the celebrity.
He, like a celebrity would go out with him. I mean, it all, again, seems kind of put on, but some of the situations seemed real. Like, those people looked real afraid.
Sometimes you could tell they were going really deep. And that was probably the most realistic. I think I'VE ever seen Bear. But this here's the thing I don't get about this show.
And I guess I need to watch it. So before anybody writes in hate mail, although Colin, I think wants to get any kind of mail. My rock fight Gmail dot com. Thank you.
Just please, this man's inbox is empty. Send him something.
Colin True
00:25:53.910 - 00:25:54.950
I'm so lonely.
Shawnté Salabert
00:25:55.030 - 00:26:10.230
But my problem with this is like, okay, if this is like a choose your own adventure version of a TV show where we, the viewer is supposed to be telling Bear what the hell to do with his life out there, isn't the whole point of Bear Grylls that he knows how to do everything? Like, can't this man just make the decisions for himself?
Colin True
00:26:11.270 - 00:26:13.870
Well, he can. I think that's just the conceit of the show, right?
Shawnté Salabert
00:26:13.870 - 00:26:15.190
It's a weird conceit.
Colin True
00:26:16.310 - 00:27:07.100
Well, let's try. We're gonna watch. I'm gonna start watching it while you're on, right? We got, we gotta watch this. I gotta at least got you.
Well, give it an episode and see. He is absolutely insufferable. Yeah, I think for sure. But I, I don't know, man. He takes outdoorsy shit and he makes television gold with it.
Like, it's, it's impossible not to watch if you start watching one of these things with him and you know, even if you know that what he's doing is kind of bullshit, he makes it entertaining. He really does. I mean, that's the Les Trout thing. Like, yeah, agreed. My money's on him if I really want to watch somebody survive.
But boy, he could be really boring too. Like, I love watching teen troops in camp whittling, right?
It's 20 minute montage of me sitting here whittling while waiting for rescue, you know, versus like Bear's like, I'm going to eat that pile of horse crap. See what happens. I'm really hungry. It's like, all right, I'm going to go with the horse crap guy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:07.260 - 00:27:11.420
All right. Wait. See you figured out a way to bring poop back into it. I just want to point out.
Colin True
00:27:11.420 - 00:27:13.940
Damn it, you're in my head. Shantay.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:13.940 - 00:27:16.540
We're going to start getting some real weird listeners on this podcast.
Colin True
00:27:17.890 - 00:27:30.530
Today's outdoor pop culture watch on the Rock fight was presented by Oboz, who wants to share their love of hiking. And we want to help them by uncovering all the different ways we love to take the long walk, including the following. Number one, Leaves.
Don't care if you have a six pack. Right.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:30.770 - 00:27:31.210
Leaves.
Colin True
00:27:31.210 - 00:27:39.890
I don't Even really know what that means. But I mean, leaves, you're out there by yourself, you're being healthy. They don't care what you look like.
You're just sort of, you know, having, having a good time in nature.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:40.530 - 00:27:45.420
Leaves don't care if you have a, you know, know keg. Leaves are just leaping.
Colin True
00:27:45.900 - 00:27:50.300
That's true. Maybe that's what they meant by this six pack with a like carrying a six pack.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:50.700 - 00:27:51.900
No, I think they meant that these.
Colin True
00:27:51.900 - 00:27:54.660
Don'T care if you have six Miller lights in your backpack. That's better.
Shawnté Salabert
00:27:54.660 - 00:27:57.260
They won't judge you for it. Colin might. I will.
Colin True
00:27:58.780 - 00:28:01.100
Number two, it's cheaper than therapy.
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:01.340 - 00:28:01.900
That's true.
Colin True
00:28:01.900 - 00:28:02.460
Actually. I don't know.
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:02.460 - 00:28:03.060
Well, it depends.
Colin True
00:28:03.060 - 00:28:04.500
Depends on the insurance you have. Really.
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:04.500 - 00:28:08.730
You know, it depends on how much gear you get from garage. Glass grown gear.
Colin True
00:28:09.130 - 00:28:21.450
That's where you should order it from. Over@garagegrowngear.com Number three, two words. Forest bathing. You ever forest bathe? You ever take a bath in the forest?
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:22.090 - 00:28:22.570
Yeah.
Colin True
00:28:23.450 - 00:28:27.490
Yeah. Do you feel like when you're in nature you're for you're just bathing in the nature of it all?
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:27.490 - 00:28:29.690
Yeah. You're just marinating in the aura out there.
Colin True
00:28:30.250 - 00:28:32.010
All right, now it sounds like we're on open container.
Shawnté Salabert
00:28:33.450 - 00:28:35.160
It's like emotional. ASMR.
Colin True
00:28:37.310 - 00:29:17.770
At number four, hiking means the Bridger Boot collection. The Bridger Ridge is here to help you smooth out the rough trails in front of you with enhanced stability and protection.
The Bridger Ridge is Oboz's first boot with Gore Tex. So bring on the smiles and the miles in the Bridger Ridge.
And if you're near Taos, New Mexico, not only did you hear dangerous Doug Schnitzbahn draft your town during last week's best outdoor town draft, but you can also pick up a pair of Oboz Bridger ridges at Taos Mountain Mountain Outfitters. This hiking appreciation moment is brought to you by oboz of Bozeman, Montana certified B Corp.
6 million tree planter inhabitant of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Oboz is the maker of premium quality footwear for the trail and the cupid to the outdoor world. Oboz love hiking.
Chris DeMakes
00:29:18.890 - 00:29:20.970
It's time for a parting shot.
Colin True
00:29:22.890 - 00:30:08.520
All right, time for the parting shot.
And also today, according to Inertia that despite the continued rise of the cost of lift tickets, the National Ski Areas association reported that the 202025 ski season in the United States is the second busiest we've ever seen. And that's with all the bad PR around Vail as well.
There were 61 million 61.5 million visitors to ski resorts this past winter, which is second only to 2022, 2023, which was the post Covid season. Nearly half of those 49% of the visitations were from season pass holders.
With another major contribution being an increase in visits to small and medium resorts. I suppose that's a good thing.
This increase makes me a little concerned, you know, that people are starting their outdoor journey skiing, which I don't think really represents the best of the outdoors.
Shawnté Salabert
00:30:08.600 - 00:30:11.960
What about skiing is concerning to you as an introductory sport?
Colin True
00:30:12.520 - 00:30:25.240
I just think it's like it's not. If that's where you're going, you get your first taste of the outdoors, then you have.
You got to pay to do it, you got to drive there, you got lift lines. All the things that I have been on the record of like that I don't like about resort skiing.
Shawnté Salabert
00:30:26.030 - 00:30:26.230
What.
Colin True
00:30:26.230 - 00:30:34.030
And then like that's. If that's where you don't branch out, it doesn't really provide the opportunity to like branch beyond these sort of infrastructure of skiing.
Shawnté Salabert
00:30:34.030 - 00:30:42.670
Maybe they could get into like maybe, oh, maybe we'll see a new sport which is underwater skiing. There's a hundred thousand mountains down there just waiting for it.
Colin True
00:30:43.470 - 00:30:45.630
In a way skiing is like skiing on water.
Shawnté Salabert
00:30:45.950 - 00:30:46.670
It's true.
Colin True
00:30:46.750 - 00:30:48.350
Frozen water, really true.
Shawnté Salabert
00:30:48.350 - 00:31:26.520
I'm saying this is somebody who does not ski. I've cross country skied in Wisconsin, which is actually I think a nice although cold introductory sport.
Like I did it when I was a kid and it was nicer. You know, you're tired as afterwards but you really work your haunches while you're doing it. But very pat like pleasing.
It's a very pleasing experience just being in the quiet winter in the, I don't know, the forest or wherever. You're cross country skiing. It is, yeah. I tried downhill once and I am not. I am pure pizza wedge.
And then the pizza starts melting and then it starts tumbling downhill and then the pizza's like, hey, I may might break a bone now. So the pizza doesn't ski anymore.

I think. I think everyone. Well, you should, you should try skiing again. I think you could. I mean if your corns can handle it. You know, I think that might be.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:33.400 - 00:31:39.560
A thing that I can't believe even poked my corns. There was only one corn, Colin. One solitary corn.
Colin True
00:31:40.280 - 00:31:46.240
Well, you know, leads to more, I guess I don't know how corn breed but you know, that's what's going.
Shawnté Salabert
00:31:46.240 - 00:31:53.810
You don't know anything about corns, Colin. This is Not a podiatry podcast, but it's the.
Colin True
00:31:54.130 - 00:32:32.790
I think, you know, skiing is important. Skiing is good. Skiing is fun. And that's not what I'm saying. I just think that if there's. If you're outdoorsy pals, you're like, oh, try skiing.
It's like, well, you're kind of the wrong people to give newbies advice, right? Like, you. You know all what to do and know where to go and how to do it.
I feel like if you want to get people into the outdoors, like, take them for a walk alongside a creek, you know, sit there and bathe in nature like we just talked about. Enjoy. Enjoy being outside. See, like, oh, my God, this is beautiful out here. How do you get here while you come down this trail, and that's how you.
You discover this, and then you kind of, like, start your journey there. So, I mean, do you remember the. You know, the things that made you want to go be outdoorsy? Do you remember any.
Are there any sort of like, inception moments of, like, ah, that is the thing that kind of made me get outside?
Shawnté Salabert
00:32:32.950 - 00:33:37.180
Yeah, I do. I do, actually. I mean, I would say it's. It's a little twofold. The little, Little sparkle fairy dust is.
I grew up in Milwaukee, and Milwaukee has a very amazing park system. The county parks there are incredible. It's well documented. I'm pretty sure they've won awards or certifications or. Someone just talks about it a lot.
But great, great park. So it was. That was kind of the beginning of it. And then I've mentioned this before, but the Boys and Girls club that I went to had a summer camp.
And going to Camp Wickham Mason, we got some fan mail from one of my former counselors, which was amazing. Jessica Boris Schumacher. You're the best. So I start. I went to summer camp. They had a free overnight trip. Just like, check it out.
See if you like it, kid. I was 8 years old, and I remember going. And this camp had a lake, it had a big meadow, it had forest, all these cabins.
And I just remember feeling happy and calm. And I grew up in an inner city, like, you know, very urban. Urbany, urban part of Milwaukee. And it was.
Colin True
00:33:37.180 - 00:33:39.060
Yeah, you had a big gang background, right?
Shawnté Salabert
00:33:39.380 - 00:34:26.960
Not me, but I do. I do know people who were. I wasn't a house once. I got shot up, like, right after I left it. But, oh, my God, I was. I was an angel child. Okay. So no.
No gang affiliations for me, unless it was, like, the Care Bear gang. But no, it was that was the worst one. That was. Yeah, I was badass. Like rainbow bear gonna beat you up with happiness. That's my style.
Very aggressively polite. I loved it, though. I got out there and I learned, like over many summers, learned how to fish. I started hiking. We went camping for the first time.
Went rock climbing, mountain biking. All of it with camp. Camp. And it was definitely my gateway drug. So thank you, Camp Wickham Mason. But you're right, it was.
It was just like starting off with smelling pine trees, essentially. It's like the smell of life. I'm into this.
Colin True
00:34:27.920 - 00:34:38.480
Look, I'm. Maybe I will get some hate mail now about. Oh, I continue to beat up on skiing. Skiing's great. I just sort of like, I see that number going up.
It's like it doesn't feel sustainable to me with climate change and everything else. It's like everybody should try skiing. Go skiing.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:38.480 - 00:34:39.840
Maybe people need to get into water.
Colin True
00:34:40.560 - 00:34:44.440
Maybe that should be changed and go check out the hundred thousand mountains that are under the water.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:44.440 - 00:34:45.670
So much on explore territory.
Colin True
00:34:46.379 - 00:34:51.259
So much as long as you can hold your breath. Yeah. But anyway, that's my parting shot.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:51.419 - 00:34:52.699
Scuba skiing.
Colin True
00:34:53.019 - 00:34:58.179
I'm telling you, it's going to happen. Fkt underwater. Fkts. I. I'm putting my money on that.
Shawnté Salabert
00:34:58.179 - 00:34:59.579
Who do you think is going to do it?
Colin True
00:35:01.659 - 00:35:02.939
Is that Killian Journey?
Shawnté Salabert
00:35:02.939 - 00:35:08.299
Yeah. Oh, you're right. Actually. Yeah, he'll just get a scuba kit and go run it out. Now that he knows. He's probably already down there.
Colin True
00:35:08.539 - 00:35:14.790
He probably was like, I got to get down there before anybody else does, you know? It's called Solomon. I need a special shoe.
Shawnté Salabert
00:35:14.950 - 00:35:16.630
I need an aquatic runner.
Colin True
00:35:16.870 - 00:35:35.510
